FEEDING THE MIND

SCRIPTURE: 1 KINGS 4:29-34

Solomon receives wisdom from God to lead Israel

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is feeding the mind. The  mind is the part of a person that makes it possible for him or her to think, feel emotions, and understand things. The mind needs to be fed with knowledge in order to function effectively. That is why education is very useful to the mind, education offers us the opportunity to feed the mind with useful information necessary for it application towards our livelihood and interaction with the world we live in.

The ultimate goal of feeding our minds is to become wise or gain wisdom. Wisdom is therefore the application of Knowledge. King Solomon having taken over from King David needed wisdom to govern the nation Israel. “And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.  Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” (1 Kings 3:7-9). In other words, for Solomon to become a wise King, he needed to feed his mind with the knowledge of God.

How then do we acquire the knowledge of God? In order to know God we must have reverence for Him and feed our minds through the study of His Word for Proverb 9:10 says The fear(reverence) of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.  Solomon feared the Lord and fed his mind with the knowledge of the Lord as his father David had taught him. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7).  We are encouraged to pray for wisdom as an essential need if we want to be pleasing God.  Jesus assures that “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8). Solomon asked for wisdom and “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. (1 Kings 4:29-30)

Wisdom from God is not restricted to old age but “…to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy (Ecclesiastes 2:26). Many are those who are not pleasing God but continue to feed their minds with the lust and fleshly desires of the world. Some of our youth have become addicted to pornography, others have fed their minds with Sports betting and other forms of lottery. For the love of money some people have fed their minds with cyber crime(sakawa) and are in the business of defrauding people. To sight an example of wrongly feeding the eye Jesus said that “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:27-28).  Paul admonished us in  Romans 12:2 to feed our minds for the purposes of renewal when he wrote that  “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God (wisdom), what is good and acceptable and perfect (discernment)My dear friend to become wise towards the  renewal of our minds in order to please God ,we must continually feed our minds with the Knowledge or  Word of God. Shalom

PRAYER

ALMIGHTY GOD, IN A WORLD FILLED WITH TEMPTATIONS, ENABLE US TO FEED OUR MINDS WITH YOUR WORD SO THAT WE WILL GAIN YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM TO DO YOUR  WILL. AMEN.
