NO MAGIC IN THE NUMBERS (JOHN 2: 1-12)

Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding ceremony.

REFLECTION

The theme for today’s reflection is ‘no magic in the numbers’. Magic is using supernatural power to influence the forces of nature. Magic may either have a human(illusionist) or demonic source and it may be good or bad. Paul alludes to magic in 2 Thessalonians 2:9 when he wrote that “The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders.”  On the other hand, miracles are the supernatural works of God. Moses also gave instruction concerning such practices in Deuteronomy 18:10-12

The source of magical power is not from God but the source of miracles is God. In today’s Scripture reading (John 2:1-12) we see Jesus turn water into wine. Jesus does not display His power for profit or showmanship as magicians do for a living but He performed the miracle to avert an embarrassing situation where there was a shortage of wine at a wedding feast He and His disciples were invited to. One of the key lessons of today’s Scripture reading is that we witness God’s miracles in our lives if we invite Jesus to be in our lives.

Although Jesus hesitated to perform the miracle of turning water into wine when He said “My hour has not yet come (John 2:4)” when asked by the mother, He went ahead to instruct the servants to fill the jars with water. It is important to note that Jesus answered the prayers of His mother, Mary. The lesson I want us to learn from this interaction is that sometimes we may pray to God for a miracle and it may appear God is not ready to let that miracle happen but faith in God is key. Mary believed in Jesus to save the day although she did not know exactly how Jesus will do it, what is most instructive is that she believed in Jesus hence she said to the servants “Do whatever he (Jesus) tells you” (John 2:5). My dear friend Jesus is not a magician, he does not go around displaying supernatural powers for the sake of showmanship and profit. He is God and those who believe in Him shall experience miracles through the power of the Holy Spirit. Peter told the Jews after a blind beggar had been healed that “By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see” (Act 3:16). Beloved in the Lord you may travel to watch someone perform magic in a specific geographical location even at a fee but if you trust and obey Jesus, you will experience His miracles everywhere you are and the good news is that it is free of charge! Remember that at the wedding feast, the couple and all other guests did not even know how the new and sweet wine came about, they never paid Jesus to turn water into wine, my dear friend walk with Jesus, invite Him into your life and He will take care of you at no cost. Shalom.

PRAYER

ALMIGHTY GOD, CURE US OF OUR DOUBT AND MAGICAL EXPECTATIONS AND STRENGTHEN OUR FAITH TO TRUST AND OBEY YOU TO EXPERIENCE OUR MIRACLES. AMEN
