AS STREAMS IN DRY LAND… (DEUTERONOMY 4:25-31)

The Israelites were instructed to remain faithful to God in the promised land.

REFLECTION

‘As streams in dry land’ is the theme for our meditation. Dry land or desert is a place where we hardly find water therefore when we hear of a stream in a dry land then it is a situation of grace and hope for the living. It means those who journey on the dry land and become weary and thirsty will be revived when they come across the streams of water in the dry land. The dry land signifies hopelessness, a lifeless situation, a life of fruitlessness and it is synonymous with a sinful and ungodly life. Moses warned the Israelites to remain faithful and guard against forsaking God when they enter promised land or else they will face the wrath of God, suffer the consequences of their sins and perish. (Deuteronomy 4:25-28)

Many believers enter a state of dry land situation because they become unfaithful God after He has answered their prayers and made them prosperous. In other words, they quickly forget their past soon after they enter the promised land of success and abundance. Moses said “if you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, and by doing what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, so as to provoke him to anger…” (Deuteronomy 4:25) My dear friend the fact that you have not carved for yourself an image or object of worship does not mean that you may not be engaged in idol worship. It is important to note that anything that takes your attention and time, anything you remain devoted to daily becomes an image you have carved for yourself. The greatest idols of our time which most Christians of our generation have carved for themselves, and for that matter have become unfaithful to God is the idols of money and materialism. My dear friend, a believer must live for God and work to earn money but unfortunately, most Christians of our time live for money and work for money. They simply show up in Church on Sundays to appease God through monetary donations. God, cannot be bribed, deceived or appeased with money. The love of money rules our minds and hearts and takes away our focus on God to the extent that we no longer pray to God and even have time for Bible studies and worship services which will deepen our faith and relationship with God. We have eventually lost the consciousness of God but are very much awake to money and materialism. This is surely a life synonymous with dry land.

Beloved in the Lord, if you realise that you find yourself in a spiritual dry land, all hope is not lost. God has provided the steam of hope and revival in midst of the dry land. The question is are you willing to be led to streams in the dry land? Do you have the desire to be revived by drinking from the streaming in the dry land? “But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the LORD your God and obey his voice.  For the LORD your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them. (Deuteronomy 4:29-31). Jesus further assures us that “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37-38. My dear friend if you will search yourself and draw close to Jesus with all your mind, heart and strength in total repentance and commitment to God, Jesus promises us that “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14) (Shalom)

PRAYER

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psalms 51:10-12)
