God sees all, be encouraged. He has his eyes on you
REFLECTION
In times of great suffering many people turn to the book of Job for comfort, encouragement or hope . The book of Job describes the ultimate form of suffering a human being could ever experience. Job, a man described us the ‘greatest of all the people of the east’ (Job 1:3c) in a flash lost everything he had. Job’s children died, all his properties are destroyed, he, himself is afflicted with sores all over his body, his wife and friends turn against him yet the Bible records that he did not sin against God by cursing him. In the noise of his unbearable afflictions, it appeared as if God, his God, was apathetic about what he was going through. Do you feel God is also silent or unconcerned about the challenges you are facing in life too?
Today’s text for reflection is part of the reply God gave to Job after the “great silence” (Job 38ff). God responded to Job in a series of questions on cosmology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy challenging Job’s competence to judge His control of the world. God used irony to point up Job’s ignorance. Job was sure that his speeches had been filled with wisdom and knowledge, but God’s first question put an end to that delusion: “Who is this that darkens My counsel with words without knowledge?”. The parade ended with two birds, the hawk and the eagle (Job 39:26-30). Who gave the birds the instinct to migrate and the knowledge to build nests? Not Job! Eagles build their nests high on the cliffs; but God gave them keen eyesight so they can see their prey from afar, swoop down, and capture it. Eagles can also find corpses on which to feed themselves and their young because God made them that way.
God neither reassured His servant, nor explained the reason for Job’s suffering. Instead God revealed His omnipotence (38:1-40:2), and then compared His power with human frailty (40:10-41:34). No one can demand to meet God on equal terms. The whole world is naked before God (Hebrews 4:13). God and man simply are not equal. God is the Lord and possess the only three attributes that no being, spirit or human, can posses. He is the omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. God has an eagle’s eye on all that is happening in this world and especially what you are going through. Just as the Eagle is described as the ‘Bird of the Heaven’ or ‘king of the Sky’ so is God the Creator of all things and the “King of the Universe”.
In God’s animate creation, we see the power of God. Fun fact, while most humans have 20/20 vision, eagles are blessed with an astounding 20/5 vision. That means that what looks sharp and clear to us at 5 feet is just as clear to an eagle from 20 feet away. No wonder we use the term “eagle eyes” to describe superb vision, Hallelujah. God who created such superb vision for the eagle has his eyes over you beloved, he also cares about you and what you are going through. You may not hear him speaking through your challenges. Your deepest fear may have overshadowed you. Your cry for help seems not to have a reply from him. Beloved, have this assurance that, just as he saw Job through his affliction and revealed his power to him, he would do same for you.
Job ended up with twice as much as he had before. He had twenty children, ten with God and ten in his home. (He and his wife were also reunited.) Friends and relatives brought money for a “restoration fund,” which Job must have used for purchasing breeders; and eventually, Job had twice as much livestock as before. He was once again a wealthy man and God allowed Job to live twice as many years (Job 42:16). May the God of Job do same for you, Amen
