EXPOSITION

The vision of Zechariah as recorded in Zechariah 2 is the third vision the Lord revealed to His servant about the things He will be doing in their midst. This third vision, in foreshadowing the city in the kingdom’s glory, is inseparably connected with the first vision recorded in Zechariah 1:7-16 which brought to light the divine security God will provide to the remnants in the form of divine horsemen. The first vision predicting hope for the struggling people, and the second vision in Zech.1:18-21 outlined the nation’s triumph over her enemies.

To return to Jerusalem means to return to God. Jerusalem represents a place of freedom, a place of divine providence, a place of divine security, a place of endless prosperity where God is its great surveyor who measures and knows the width and the length of their needs and provides them in due time. No matter how blessed we are in our exile, it can never erase our quest to return to our Jerusalem. The Jerusalem may be desolate now, its walls and inhabitants might have been crushed, listen to what the angel of the Lord said; “Jerusalem SHALL be inhabited like a village without walls, because of the multitude of the people and animals in it. For I will be a wall of fire all around it…….and I will be the glory within it”(Zech.2:4-5). God is telling the prophet that though this place is desolate now, it will surely be occupied by people and animals, they will occupy it as if there was no wall (protection). It means the coming of the people will not be restricted. The prophet seems to be asking: ‘Lord, will that not be dangerous?’ and the Lord answered by saying: I, God almighty will build not just a wall, but a wall fire around it, and I will be their glory as the Shekinah presence in Ezekiel 11:22-23.

If the fire of Elohim protects a city and His Shekinah (glory) resides in it, what can prevent its increase? Friends in the Lord, the promises proceeding from the vision is enormous.
This simple vision is fraught with thrilling good news for Zechariah and his contemporaries (Zech.2:4b-13), who were struggling to rebuild a ruined city and its temple, just as it is for every chosen vessel looking and working for a brighter future for God’s elects.

Five promises ensued from this vision:
Jerusalem would enjoy a prosperous expansion (Zech. 2:4b). The prediction was that the desolated Jerusalem will be flooded with people like a rural community without walls. That ‘overflowing bounds’ or ‘exceeding limits’ describes the fullest scope of anything built on God and with God. Anything built on and with God may be desolate now but will surely bulge out far beyond its borders because of increased population, material and spiritual prosperity that God will provide in His own time.

Jerusalem would experience special divine protection and glory (Zech. 2:5).
Israel would be repatriated and restored (Zech. 2:6).
The nations plundering Israel would be judged and punished (Zech. 2:8).
The earth would be prepared for its full Kingdom blessings (Zech. 2:10).
This is your promise too as a child of God, through Christ Jesusn if you will yield to His call and return to Jerusalem.

CONCLUSION.

The new Jerusalem is for us those who washed their clothes in the blood of Lamb (Rev. 21:1-2). We are the chosen generation, the elect of the Lord. These promises are for us who are called by His name. If we yield completely to God, He promised to dwell among us (His Church) and provide us with divine protection. We are the apple of His eyes (Zech. 2:8b), He will surely protect us.
The presence of God comes with His Glory, it also demands holiness. A glorious God cannot dwell in you and you will not be glorious, we must yield completely to His will for us to remain under His care. He is inviting us to return to Jerusalem where our security and prosperity is assured.

PRAYER

Lord Almighty, I am grateful for the promises in Your Word. I have come back to You the keeper of my life and my soul. I surrender all my will for Yours, come and dwell in me today than ever before. According to Your promise, provide me and all who call for your divine protection to live in peace even in this perverse generation. Oh God! Grant us the needed grace to access Your blessings as children of the Kingdom, and live to work for and with You through Jesus the Christ. Amen.
