The utter destruction of Babylon

REFLECTION

Nothing left but foundations is theme for our reflection. Babylon had hitherto oppressed Israel and held them captive for a number of years. Babylon was able to attack Israel because God’s protection was taken away from the nation Israel on account of their disobedience. God listened to the prayer of Israel in captivity because of His convenant with them and promised to destroy Babylon, the enemy of Israel, to the extent that nothing but the foundations of Babylon will be left.

The level of Babylon’s destruction is captured in Jeremiah 51:1-2 “Thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will stir up the spirit of a destroyer against Babylon, against the inhabitants of Leb-kamai, and I will send to Babylon winnowers, and they shall winnow her, and they shall empty her land, when they come against her from every side on the day of trouble.” The reason for their destruction is written in Jeremiah 51:5, For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken by their God, the LORD of hosts, but the land of the Chaldeans(Babylon) is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel.” therefore “…Sharpen the arrows! Take up the shields! The LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, for that is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance for his temple (Jeremiah 51:11)

My dear friend, the key lesson of today’s reflection is that when you have a relationship and a covenant with God, He does not forsake you but fights your battles for you. God is able to reduce to nothing those who gang up against you in order to humiliate and destroy you. When God is done with your enemy or enemies there shall be nothing left for them but their very foundations. Beloved in the Lord, don’t waste your time and energy fighting your enemies or those who seek to destroy you, God has an insurance policy for you. In this insurance policy, any damage caused by your enemies shall be recovered by God, your enemies shall be disempowered and brought to naught, nothing shall be left but their mere foundations. God may not destroy them completely because He wants them to witness your elevation and more importantly, His glory and power at work in your life.

Beloved in the Lord, we are admonished by Paul in Romans 12:18-21, that “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” In other words, let God fight your battles, continue to love and do good to those who even hate you, plan evil against you and desire your downfall. Advent means the coming of the Saviour, let us prepare for His coming by doing His will even when we are being attacked on account of our Lord and Master Jesus for when He comes nothing but the foundations of our enemies shall be left, then they will know that we serve the Lord almighty. He is able to save us from oppression of any kind regardless of the oppressor! Shalom.

PRAYER

Father Lord, we acknowledge that we are weak but strong in faith. We do not have any power of our own but completely depend on you to fight our battles. Merciful and everlasting Father, be our shield and sword that protects us againt our enemies even us we await the Advent of our Lord and Master Jesus. Amen.
