Warning against false teachers.

REFLECTION

The solid foundation is the theme for our reflection. A solid foundation is a well established system or a belief on which an entity derives validity. An example is the Constitution of a country which is the solid foundation upon which a government, all activities of government and indeed all other laws of a country derive their existence and validity. Similarly, the Christian faith derives its validity from the Scripture or the Truth which is its solid foundation.

Paul encourages Timothy to focus on teaching and guiding the christians under his pastoral ministry to have their faith built on the solid foundation of the Gospel which has been handed over to them by the Apostles. There are two fundamental truth about the solid foundation of the Gospel as captured by Paul in 2 Timothy 2:19, “…God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who confesses the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” In other words, the two fundamental truth on the seal are one, the Lord shall save those who have faith in him. Two, anyone who has faith in Jesus and confesses Him as Lord and Saviour does His will and will not disobey Him.

It is important for Paul to remind Timothy of the features or qualities of a believer whose faith is built on the solid foundation so that Timothy will not spend his time and energy quarrelling or arguing with unrepentant false teachers like “…Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. But God’s firm foundation stands,” (2 Timothy 2:17-18). The truth is that the final resurrection of the departed will take place at the second coming of our Lor and Master Jesus Christ

As the Advent of Christ approaches, you must uphold the solid foundation of your faith. You must study the Word of God consistently and like Timothy was encouraged by Paul “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) so that you will not engage yourself in fruitless or unproductive ventures such as “…quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.” (2 Timothy 2:14). You also “… avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness,”(2 Timothy 2:16) My dear friend, we have a solid foundation in Christ Jesus, let us remain focused and continue to believe in Him and follow His perfect examples in pleasing God so that we do not allow ourselves to be led astray by false teachers of our generation who themselves are lost and do not have the features or qualities of our solid foundation.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus may your truth which is the Solid foundation of our faith continue to sustain us until your second coming. Amen
