LEAPS OF JOY (LUKE 1:39-45)

Mary visits Elizabeth

REFLECTION

Leaps of joy is the theme for today’s reflection. To leap means a force or sudden movement of the body usually from one place to another. A leap of joy means to be exuberant or very happy about something. “…when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.” (Luke 1:41-44)

My dear friend, the good news of salvation came to everyone including babies. A baby in the womb is usually accustomed to the voice and body movement of the mother. This is the natural bond. However, the wonders that took place is how the baby in Elizabeth womb was able to leap for joy at hearing of Mary’s greetings since Mary does not live with them and does not often speak to the mother. This indeed shows that God is able to reach out to anyone at anytime of his or her life. No one is excluded from hearing the good news of Jesus’s coming to the world to save us.

Cognitively, babies may not understand the things happening around them but when we are excited about something they also become excited about it therefore let us have joyful conversations about the Salvation of Jesus and see our babies leap for joy anytime they hear about Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. When Elizabeth’s baby grew into the person of John the Baptist, he clearly understood his mandate in the unfolding story of salvation and played his part. We are greatly admonished to “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). Our children are on vacation, it is important to explain the history of our salvation and give them a reason to leap for joy and be grateful for God’s love for humanity through Jesus Christ. They should not only leap for joy at the hearing of Christmas gifts but they shoud understand the essence of the Advent season and Christmas and then experience an inner leap of joy and gratitude for Jesus before all other things are added. Shalom

PRAYER

Almighty God, may our children develop love for you and always leap for joy anytime they hear the name of Jesus. Amen
