ISAIAH 9:2-7
TITUS 2:11-14
LUKE 2:1-20
“Christ, the Saviour is born” is the theme for our Christmas reflection. A saviour is a person who saves someone from danger or difficulty. We shall reflect on the reasons Jesus is the Saviour of the World. Christ, the saviour is born for the following reasons:
- Christ the saviour is born to bring light to those who are in the darkness and to establish God’s Kingdom on earth.
- Christ the saviour is born and by His grace, salvation will come to those who believe.
- Christ the saviour is born to bring hope and elevation to the humble and nonentities in society.
Firstly, Luke 2:6-7 is the fulfilment of Isaiah 9:6 which indicate that Christ the saviour is born to bring light to those who are in the darkness of this world and to establish the Kingdom of God among His people. A person who has no relationship with Christ certainly is walking in darkness and is in danger of being oppressed and manipulated by Satan just like the Israelites at the time of Isaiah disobeyed God and were oppressed by the Assyrian Empire. Christ is the light of the world and anyone who has Christ as his or her Lord and Saviour shall never be overcome by the darkness of sin and ungodliness. “the people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:2) It is further revealed to us in John 1:4-5 that “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Again, Christ, the saviour is born to establish a government of justice and peace for those who have been saved from the darkness of sin. “For to us a child is born, to us, a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace, there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7). If Christians will fully rely on the teachings and the examples of Christ, we shall have justice and peace in governments where Christians form the majority. Corruption and selfish desires of amassing wealth at the detriment of the poor and vulnerable shall be a thing of the past. A Christ-centred government will give us a foretaste of God’s Kingdom.
Secondly, Christ, the saviour is born so that through His grace we shall be saved. It is for this reason Paul wrote in his epistle to Titus that “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, (Titus 2:11-13). Surely, Christ, the saviour is born in order to bring “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.” (Luke 2:14). We are not only saved eternally through the grace of Christ, but we are also beneficiaries of His peace as we navigate through the uncertainties and challenges of life. The birth of Christ the saviour has bestowed upon us unmerited grace for which we are able to call on God in thanksgiving and in times of distress.
Thirdly, Christ, the Saviour is born to bring hope and elevation to the humble. Luke 2:8-20 further testifies that Christ the saviour is born so that the Goodnews of the Lord’s birth will bring favour upon the Shepherds who hitherto had been considered irrelevant according to the social structure or class. Indeed, Jesus came to elevate the lowly and the humble. Paul’s admonishment to the Corinthians is relevant at this point when he wrote “by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not —to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. ” (1 Corinthians 1:26-29). Usually, when a king is born it’s the royals that are first informed and invited but the shepherds were favoured, in that when the King of the Universe was born, the Angels broke the news to them even before kings like Herod heard the news . The era of Grace was inaugurated by Jesus’s birth and we the lowly and non-entities have become beneficiaries of God’s grace through Jesus Christ. May this Christmas bring upon you and your family God’s blessings, favour and elevation!
In conclusion, Christ the Saviour is born to bring light to those in darkness and to establish God’s Kingdom and a government centred on justice and peace, Christ the Saviour is born to bring salvation through His grace, last but not least, Christ the Saviour is born so that the humble and nonentities according to the standards of this world will be elevated in Christ. May the commemoration of the birth of Jesus deepen our faith in Him and renew our commitment to His mission on earth.
