Isaiah prophesied about the great light, the Saviour Jesus whose government shall bring justice and peace.

REFLECTION

Seeing a great light is the theme for our reflection today. Prophet Isaiah ministered in an era where Israel was in the darkness of sin. They were spiritually and morally deaf and blind (Isaiah 6:10). It is for this reason God’s judgment came upon and many were taken captive and exiled by Assyrian empire. God would later use Cyrus the Persian King to return them from exile.

Isaiah brings God’s promise of redemption to Israel. God’s plan of redemption and restoration was physical and spiritual. It had an immediate and future effect. The fulfillment of God’s promise is that the nation shall see a great light. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” (Isaiah 9:2). The description of this great light is in Isaiah 9:6-7, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.” In other words, the great light is Jesus Christ. Without Christ we remain in the darkness of sin. Let us have a deeper relationship with Christ so that we can overcome the darkness of sin and escape the wrath and judgment of God. Shalom

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, strengthen us to have a deeper relationship with Jesus who is the great light of our salvation. May our eyes remain fixated on Jesus, the great light in the new year and beyond. Amen
