REFLECTION

Sheep among wolves is the theme for our reflection. Sheep is a calm and harmless animal while a wolf is a wild and dangerous animal which preys on the sheep. Jesus sends out seventy-two people or followers to announce His coming and prepare the grounds for the Good News and salvation of many but they were to be watchful because He forewarned them that “… behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves” (Luke 10:3)

It was a mission where they will go in peace but they will be met with hostility from people like Saul and the Pharisees who were strong fanatics of Judaism. Saul’s type of person is described as a wolf who preys on the disciples of Christ in Act 9:1-3, “…Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

In our generation we still have wolves preying and devouring the messengers of Christ in a number of ways. The wolves of our time are the unrepentant people in the Church who wage war against the servants of God whose duty is to teach and preach the Gospel. There are wolves who represent religious fanatics, they will go every length to stop the Gospel from being preached in other parts of Africa and the world where religions other than Christianity is dominant. Some missionaries were murdered simply because they preached Christ. There are cyber wolves on the internet who attack preachers on social media and do their very best to discredit the Good News and the messengers of God. The good news is that, “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

Our duty is to preach “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” (2 Timothy 4:1-5). Regardless of the opposition and hostility from the wolves in the world, let us to preach the Good News to the perishing for “You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf…” (2 Chronicles 20:17). Fear not but avail yourself to be counted among the Lord’s messengers. Shalom.

PRAYER

Almighty God, when the going gets tough,  protect us from the wolves and grant us the grace to preach the Gospel in season and out of season. Amen.
