LENT REFLECTIONS (DAY 11)

The theme for today’s reflection is seeing the light. To see means to perceive with the eye and light on the other hand is the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible. In Jesus’s teaching, Jesus likens the eye to light and the body to the eye. This is an interesting analogy. Since light influences what the eye sees, the eye also influences the internal direction and outlook of the body. For this reason, Jesus said Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. (Luke 11:34-35). In other words, our eyes play an important role in the things that influence the thoughts and actions of the body. The ear also does same but our focus in today’s reflection is the eye.

The videos and pictures we consume with our eyes may have a long-lasting devastating effect on our thought processes and consequently on our beliefs and actions. Some believers are struggling with sexahaulic behaviour or tendencies because they had consistently fed their eyes with pornography and unwholesome images and materials. Social media is flooded with nudity and sexually immoral videos that has caught the attention of most people. Your eyes’ spiritual health depends on what you feed it. If you feed your eyes with the Word of God it will remain healthy, because what goes into the body is healthy, you will remain morally and spiritually healthy. “…if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” (Luke 11:36). Lent season gives us the opportunity to allow our eyes to consistently see the light. What is Light? The light is the Word of God, the psalmist in Psalm 119:105 testifies that “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Remember, the only sure way to keep seeing the light is to follow the principle of “No Bible No Breakfast”!

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, help us to be disciplined in controlling our eyes. May we yearn to see the light through the Word of God so that our lives will please and glorify God. Amen.
