LENT REFLECTIONS (DAY 17)

The theme for our reflection is “Man of Sorrow” Sorrow is a feeling of deep distress caused by loss, disappointment, or other misfortune suffered by oneself or others. Isaiah gives us a vivid description of the man of Sorrow, “He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.” (Isaiah 53:2-4). Isaiah foretold the sorrow and suffering of no other person than Jesus our savior.

The key lesson for today’s reflection is that whenever we experience sorrow in our lives, we must understand and believe that we are not alone. Most often than not sorrow may be caused by the death of a beloved person, betrayals, accident or any other form of misfortune that may affect us emotionally, psychological, physically and even financially. Compared to joyful moments or celebrations, there are fewer people who may usually or consistently show us empathy and support in sorrowful moments. You may become lonely and experience despair in your sorrowful moments but the good news for us believers is that, Jesus who was once upon a time the man of sorrow is present with us through the power of the Holy Spirit to console and strengthen us to overcome the turmoil and struggles life throws at us.

The season of Lent,  helps us reflect on Jesus and His immeasurable sacrifice as the man of sorrow. Through Jesus we have great encouragement and assurance that our sorrows shall surely come to an end because He has promised us that “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus the man of sorrow perfectly understands our pains, sufferings and sorrows. He will gives us the strength to overcome them, it is only a matter of time therefore let us cast our burdens on upon Him. Shalom.

PRAYER

Thank you Jesus for being the rock of our salvation and the most dependable pillar to lean on in our time of sorrow and despair. Amen
