LENT REFLECTIONS (DAY 37)
The bare necessities is the theme for our reflection. The bare necessities is an idiomatic expression that means having only the basic things that you need to survive and nothing extra.
Jesus made two profound statements about paying taxes and the resurrection. The Scribes, the Chief Priest together with Sadducees were all concerned about the necessities of a person in this world. In other words, their attention was focused on the needs of human beings rather than their salvation. Chief among these needs were paying of tax and marriage after the resurrection. Jesus answered them respectively “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Luke 20:25) and the next one is “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. (Luke 20: 34-36)
Dear friend, the key lesson Jesus is teaching us in today’s reflection is that the bare necessities we need for eternal life are not found in the things and wants of this life such as money and its usage and marriage and its issues on the day of resurrection. In as much as we require money to pay our taxes and will eventually have the need to marry, the Kingdom of God is not about this mundane things therefore let us possess the bare necessities for our salvation. We do not have control over somethings in this world, two important ones are taxes and death. What you have control over now is the decision to give your life to Christ. A tax is impossed by a government and death on the other hand is inevitable. The bare necessities or the only things needed and nothing more, to attain the Kingdom of God is to repent, accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, be baptized and live according His Word. We shall become beneficiaries of His grace through faith in Him and all our needs shall be supplied according to His power and glorious riches. These are the bare necessities needed for life. If we truly understand what is needed in life then we will no longer worry our feeble minds or be frustrated about who to pay taxes to and who will marry our spouse after our death. May the Lord help us to focus on the true bare necessities of life so as to please Him the rest of our lives. Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, guide us to always focus on our salvation even as we pursue the necessities of this life and may we always focus on the bare necessities or the most important things needed for our eternal life in Christ Jesus. Amen.
