REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is, the scapegoat bearing the sins of the people. A scapegoat is a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency. According to Leviticus 16:21-22, a scapegoat is a goat sent into the wilderness after the Jewish chief priest had symbolically laid the sins of the people upon it.

It is important to note that God made Jesus the scapegoat for the forgiveness and salvation of many. It is for this purpose when John the Baptist saw Jesus walking towards him he said “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Again, John 3:16-17 gives a deeper meaning to Jesus being the scapegoat who bore our sins and brought us salvation when He said “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” In others words, the scapegoat in Leviticus 16:22-23 was offered on numerous occasions to bear the sins of the people but Jesus the scapegoat was offered once and for all, anyone who believes in Him, repents and is baptized is saved by grace. We are being invited to embrace Jesus our Saviour who is the scapegoat that bore the sins of humanity on the cross, died, resurrected, ascended to Heaven and will come back to judge and save His faithful servants. Shalom.

PRAYER

Thank you Lord Jesus for being the scapegoat that bore our sins on the cross. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to live by your Word and perfect example even as we await your second coming. Amen
