REFLECTION

Alpha and Omega is the theme for our reflection. Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. ‘Alpha and Omega’ therefore means the first and the last or the beginning and the end. “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:12-13). Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega brings great hope to His believers that all their suffering and tribulations shall come to an end and those who have been faithful to the end shall be rewarded with eternal life and a citizen status of the new Jerusalem.

To prove that He is indeed the Alpha and the Omega, John 1:1-3 tells us that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.” If all things were made through Him, then He is indeed the Alpha and the Omega. We need to call on Him even as we wait upon Him to bring everything to an end at His second coming.

Jesus being the Alpha and Omega also teaches us to number our days since every creation that has a date of creation must surely have a date of expiration. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 reminds us that “For everything, there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die;” It is, for this reason, the Psalmist in Psalm 90:12 pleads with God to “teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” We can only find the wisdom to please God as we journey towards the end of our lives from Jesus Christ who is the Alpha and the Omega. Again, the Psalmist beseeched the Lord, “O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing, they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! (Psalms 39:4-6) Dear friends in the Lord, let us humble ourselves before Jesus, the Alpha and the Omega and heed to Paul’s admonishment when He wrote that “I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1-2) In other words, let us render our lives and bodies which have been created with a beginning and an end, to serve and worship Jesus Christ who is the Alpha and the Omega. It is only when we have served faithfully that we will be expectant of the reward that Jesus brings to His faithful servants when He returns the second time. May we be found ready or prepared to meet the Alpha and Omega when our lives come to an end on this earth. Shalom.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, we totally surrender our lives into Your hands because You are the Alpha and the Omega. We are feeble in strength and have no power of our own. Help us to endure the challenges of being faithful believers to the end and may You find us worthy servants who deserve Your reward of eternal life. Amen
