REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is life of God ‘s life, breath of God’s breath. A person must have life in order to breath. In other words God is the source of life and breath of all livings creatures including human beings. “…the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature…But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.” (Genesis 2:7, 20-22)
The key lesson of today’s reflection is that the life and breath of God in us are borrowed, therefore we are only stewards. Human beings and other living creatures through biological means can recreate their own but the mystery is that it takes God to give life and breath to their lifeless offsprings to be classified as living creatures. A time will surely come again for God to take back His life and breath, rendering that which was once a living creature lifeless, inactive and useless. The state of being lifeless, motionless, inactive and useless is what is described as death. When death happens, human beings and other living creatures share the same destiny, they are returned to the ground to become the very dust that they were formed out of. “For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so does the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.” (Ecclesiastes 3:19-20)
Life of God’s life and breath of God’s breath means we are absolutely nothing or mere bodies without God’s life and breath. Dear friend, let us humble ourselves and “…love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37) We own nothing in this world, therefore, we must always give glory to God and praise His holy name for His manifold blessings and grace. After a bountiful harvest, the rich man said to himself “I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:29-21). When God takes back His life and breath, we can no longer gather or mass money and wealth for ourselves, it is all vanity. I encourage you to let God be the center of your life by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour so that if this present life and breath is taken away from you, you shall surely become the beneficiary through faith and grace, of the second life which is the eternal life. Shalom.
