THE GOD WHO KNITS AND WEAVES (PSALM 139:1-18)
REFLECTION
The God who knits and weaves. Weaving is the process of taking two sets of yarn and weave them into fabric. The difference between Knitting and weaving is that knitting means to entangle the threads in such a way that they run parallel to each other whereas in weaving the threads are warped to form a criss-cross pattern. Knitting and weaving are all works of art and creativity.
The Psalmist gives an anthropomorphic description (human characteristic) to God as an artist with great creativity when he writes that “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.” (Psalm 139:13-15).
Knitting and weaving are both time consuming arts that require patience, discipline and care to accomplish a piece of work. It goes to reason that God places a priceless value on human beings, no wonder He said “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:26-27)
The fact that we have been “…fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14) by the knitting and weaving creativity of God means that we must have an uncompromising respect or value for human dignity. Every human being regardless of age, gender, race, disability, class, religion or political affiliation must be accorded the greatest respect because he or she shares in our common humanity and the imago Dei (image of God). It is for this reason that even an insult is considered a grave sin. “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” Dear friend, everyone born of a man and a woman has been carefully knitted and woven by God, it for this reason we are all human beings yet we are individually unique in our appearance, abilities and limitations. GOD IS INDEED GREAT! It is our duty as Christians to promote, preach and practice human dignity through the unconditional love of Christ, show mercy and forgiveness to all who wrong us and live at peace with all.
Again, because we have been knitted and woven by God, we are naturally beautiful and handsome, there is no need to overly apply all manner of cosmetics to our bodies in order to recustomise, reconstruct or even recreate some parts of our bodies through very expensive surgical procedures. Part of our dignity as human beings is to appreciate, be content and accepting of who we are have been created to be and use our God-given potentials to serve God and humanity.
In summary we have discovered that God as an artist with great creativity hence our we uniquely made to glorify Him. Shalom.
