REFLECTION

Awesome God is the theme for our reflection. To be awesome means to be inspiring or extremely impressive. To describe something or someone as awesome one would have had an encounter with the thing or the person. The Psalmist who is an Israelite had observed and encountered two deities, one created by human beings or made with human hands and one who is self-existing, “I AM WHO I AM.” (Exodus 3:14).

The Psalmist’s observation is that for pagans, “Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.” (Psalms 115:4-8). Having experienced the awesomeness of God and the manifestation of His wonderful works among His people, the Psalmist said “Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases… O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield. You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.” (Psalms 115:3, 9-11)

Dear friend, we have been greatly encouraged and given ample reason or evidence to trust in the Lord, for He is the living and awesome God. To experience the awesomeness of God, we are encouraged in James 4:8-10 to “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:8-10) In other words, we see the awesomeness of God when we have a relationship with Him. We must separate ourselves from sin and live a righteous life by imitating our Lord Jesus Christ through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Shalom.

PRAYER

Awesome God, to You we surrender our lives as living sacrifices because you are the only true God. Continue to be our help and shield when we are hit by the storms of life. Praise be to Your Holy name. Amen
