REFLECTION
I will seek my sheep is the theme for our reflection. Judgement and doom is pronounced upon the leaders of Israel who are the shepherds of the people. These leaders are the civil and religious leaders of Israel; in others words, the King and priests. The leaders of Israel failed to provide godly leadership to protect the weak and vulnerable. They rather exploited the people and exposed them to danger. (Ezekiel 34:1-8). It is for this reason the Lord spoke through Prophet Ezekiel that “Thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require my sheep at their hand and put a stop to their feeding the sheep. No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them…I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice.” (Ezekiel 34:6,15-16)
A shepherd or a leader is foundamentally a steward entrusted with the responsibility of managing the affairs of God’s people according to the will and direction of God. To lead people is a privilege that comes with honour and integrity. We are most importantly accountable to God and those who entrusted us with the mantle of leadership.
A civil, religious or spiritual leader is not to abuse or take advantage of those he or she serves as a leader lest the sheep or God’s people are scattered in despair. God will always raise new leaders to gather His people and be good shepherds over them but woe to those who abuse their privileged positions of leadership to abuse the vulnerable, amass wealth from the little resources mutually owned by the people, scatter the people through draconian laws and vindictiveness. When God comes gathering and searching for His people, the irresponsible leaders may not be able to stand the wrath and judgement of God. Whether you hold a political or civil, religious or traditional leadership position or authority as a Christian, you must always humble yourself before God, do His will, serve the people with humility and love, be accountable, and above all respect their human dignity and rights. Shalom.
PRAYER
Almighty God, continue to raise God-fearing leaders in whom your Spirit dwells so that they will protect the dignity of humanity and work towards the unity and love of Your people while protecting the weak and vulnerable in society. Amen.
