REFLECTION

Breakfast on the beach is the theme for our reflection. Breakfast is a meal eaten in the morning, the first of the day. It has been observed that a fast takes place after supper throughout the night till morning, therefore, the first meal of the day taken in the morning is called breakfast. The disciples had gone fishing. “They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.” (John 21:3). They were obviously hungry, tired and frustrated as daybreak.

Uknown to the disciples, Jesus Christ their Master had already made provision for them by preparing breakfast for them. An event anyone in their shoes would least expect at that material time. After Jesus had granted them a bountiful harvest, “…When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” (John 21:9-12).

The disciples fished all night without success but when Jesus came to the beach their despair turned into hope, scarcity turned to abundance and their hunger turned into satisfaction. Jesus’ breakfast on the beach with the disciples is a sign of God’s providence in times of need or scarcity. It is the manifestation of the fact that where our strength ends or is limited that is where God begins His work. Jesus assures us that “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26). Again, Jesus’ breakfast on the beach with the disciples also teaches us that God blesses our hustles or efforts. If the disciples had stayed at home, would there have been a plentiful harvest? The fact that they went to hustle for fish led to a blessing. Jesus blessed their hard work and effort with a bountiful harvest. “How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest —and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man. (Proverbs 6:9-11) Arise and shine, don’t give up! Sometimes the hustle may get tougher or more challenging but with determination and faith in the Lord, your needs shall be provided according to His perfect will.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, be with us in our time of struggles and scarcity, help us to overcome unbelief and discouragement, for you are the source of our strength and the Lord of the harvest in whom our needs are graciously and adequately provided. Amen
