FOR EVERYTHING, THERE IS A SEASON (ECCLESIASTES 3:1-8)

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “For everything, there is a season” A season is a time characterized by a particular circumstance or feature. We shall reflect on the facts that we have no control over the seasons and times in our lives and it means the day of our Lord approaches and our lives are coming to an end on earth. He acknowledged the changes in time from our date of birth to the date of death. (Ecclesiastes 3:3-8)

Dear friend, if for everything there is a season then it means we have no control over the seasons and times in our lives. King Solomon observed that no season is permanent therefore he wrote, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2). The important fact is that we have the opportunity to be good stewards of the seasons and time God graciously gives us as human beings and most importantly as believers. It is for this reason the Prophet Micah admonishes us that “He (God) has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8) In other words, Jesus reminds us that as the seasons and times change you must “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’… ” (Matthew 22:37-40)

Beloved in the Lord, as the seasons and times change, it means the day of our Lord approaches and our lives are coming to an end on earth, hence, “a time to be born and a time to die: (Ecclesiastes 3:2) Again, Jesus reminds us, “…If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Luke 12:39-40). Since we do not have control over the changes in the seasons and times, we join the Psalmist to pray that “All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalms 90:9-12). Let us remain hopeful, prayerful and faithful in our relationship with God even as we journey through the seasons and times of life.

In summary, we have learnt that to everything, there is a season, therefore, we have no control over the seasons and times in our lives. Again, the day of our Lord approaches and our lives are coming to an end on earth. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to remain faithful to the end. Shalom.

PRAYER

Lord of the seasons and times, strengthen us to understand Your will and trust You as the seasons and times change in our lives. Holy Spirit, direct our lives so that we may not be careless in the season of prosperity and abundance or lose hope in difficult times. We completely surrender all that we are, all that we have and what we shall become into Your gracious hands, O Lord our shield and redeemer. Amen.
