REFLECTIONS
The theme for our reflection is guard your steps. Guard your steps means to be watchful or to be careful about how you behave, or you will get into trouble. King Solomon’s counsel for the Israelites concerning their relationship with God is “Guard your steps when you go to the house of God.”(Ecclesiastes 5:1). In other words, they are to fear God and show Him reverence by guarding their steps before him. They must worship God in total honesty and faithfulness.
Dear friend, there are a number of things some Christians take for granted in their relationship with God. We must understand that the house of God is not a social club or leisure centre or park where we go to meet friends and family to while away the time when we are bored or wish to be entertained. We must be watchful or guard our steps in our covenant relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We must not take the following spiritual exercises in our relationship with God for granted especially in the House of God as believers:
- We must pay attention to the Word of God when it is being preached in the house of God or wherever we find ourselves, many people get distracted during Church service by their phones or chatting with others sitting close to them. They eager dance and give their offerings than to listen to the Word of life and God’s will for their lives. “…To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.” (Ecclesiastes 5:1)
- Do not make vows or promises in the house of God just because others are doing same. Do not get carried away by the euphoria and excitement of the moment and make utterances that you are most likely not going to fulfill or carry out, either because you don’t believe in doing so or may not have the means to do same. We must guard our steps by being watchful in our utterances before the Lord. “Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words. When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear.” ( Ecclesiastes 5:2-7)
Beloved in the Lord, If you lack the wisdom of God and the fulfillment His will through the listening, studying and obeying of His Word then you will certainly act in ways and make utterances that are mostly likely to offend Him or demonstrate your lack of honesty and faithfulness to Him. Shalom
PRAYER
Holy Spirit strengthen us in our relationship with God. May we guard our steps by worshipping Him in total reverence, honesty and faithfulness. Amen.
