REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is highlights and shadows. In the area of photography and images highlights are the brightest elements in an image; shadows are the darkest parts. Put in another way, highlights are the happy and interesting parts of life and shadows are sad and challenging parts of life. Our lives are therefore a combination of highlights and shadows. It is for this reason, King Solomon admonishes us that “Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. So if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity. ” (Ecclesiastes 11:7-8)

Dear friend, for those of us who pray for longevity of life, one fact is certain, we must learn to rejoice and be content with the many years God will grant us on earth. Some of these years will be full of brightness and joy, however as the year go by, sickness and challenges of ageing will represent our darkest days on earth. Unfortunately these darkest days may be many. This is the stark reality of life everyone must go through or endure at one point in time. We can only pray to God to be merciful and grant us the tenacity and spiritual strength to go through all. The good news is that during the highlights and shadows of life we are greatly encouraged with the Words of our Lord to Paul that “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” With this assurance Paul says “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). In both the highlights and shadows of life, always put your trust in the Lord and remain faithful to Him because “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentation 3:22-23) You may be reading this reflection whiles in good health or going through some challenges of a sort. Guess what, God is still God in all situations. The highlights and shadows shall pass away but His love and mercy endures forever for those who trust and love Him. “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. (Romans 14:8) Shalom.

PRAYER

“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken” in the highlights and shadows of my life. Amen (Psalm 62:1-2)
