REFLECTION

Living in the light of death is the theme for today’s reflection. The preacher in Ecclesiastes makes a clarion call on us to “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”; before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain,” (Ecclesiastes 12:1-2) In other words, have a relationship with God and serve Him with all your youthful strength, time and most resourceful days on earth before the reality of ageing and its challenges comes upon you when you can do little or nothing as a steward for the Lord. We must do our best for the Lord during our youthful stage before we begin to live in the light of death or experience the signs of death which come with sickness and ageing.

Living in the light of death is when we come to a stage in life where the reality of ageing and it physical challenges clearly demonstrates to us that we are approaching the climax of our lives. (Ecclesiastes 12:2-6) The breeze of death is felt and there is absolutely nothing we can do than to patiently embrace it. Certainly “… the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7) Living in the light of death must not discourage us or render us hopeless but it should deepen our faith in the Lord, for He is the creator and our Saviour through our Lord Jesus Christ. “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2). What is most important as you live in the light of death is genuine repentance and regeneration by accepting our Lord and Master Jesus as your Lord and Saviour “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17). When you have prepared and surrendered your body and spirit to be saved by Christ then you must continually “…by the mercies of God, present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:1-2) Shalom.

PRAYER

Gracious Lord, “…teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Amen. (Psalm 90:12)
