REFLECTION

Childhood and life restored. God restored the life of the son of the widow of Zarephat through the Prophet Elijah. Childhood is the most enjoyable and nolstalgic moment of our lives on earth. It is a given that we grow into adulthood, age and then die, therefore, we least expect Childhood to be cut short by sickness and death. This was the situation the Widow of Zarephat’s son found himself,  “…his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him…Then he(Elijah) stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the LORD, “O LORD my God, let this child’s life come into him again.” And the LORD listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived.” (1 Kings 17:17, 21-22). Truly we serve the God of life and death.

Beloved in the Lord, in today’s reflection we discovered that the child’s childhood and life was brought to an end by a severe illness but for the intervention of Elijah as the vessel of God that child would have missed childhood and the opportunity to live and bring happiness to the mother. It is important to note that children are the most vulnerable group in society and need to be given much attention and protection. Apart from the pathological ailment of childhood, it is regrettable to mention that there are more severe and deadlier ailment in our societies today which are prematurely ending the childhood and lives of our children. Examples of these severe societal ailments are pornography, nudity, alcoholism, the culture of insult, indecency and immorality championed by mainstream traditional media and social media. Our Children stand the risk of losing their childhood and the dignity of their lives through the exposure to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) which are gradually gaining grounds in counties through policy, economic and political expediency.  The Church is called by God in our societies just as Elijah was called upon to be a vessel of hope and restoration of life to the Widow’s son. The Church must become more active in her ministry to children and to help support parents through an all inclusive children ministry that take into consideration the severe or deadly societal ailments, abnormalities or decadence that may temper with the precious and innocent lives of our future leaders. Jesus instructs that “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 19:14).

We currently have all manner of immunization against childhood diseases and health restoration. Similarly, when it comes to the preservation and protection of the innocence, moral and spiritual lives of our children, the church and parents must ensure that the Bible and its teachings becomes their immunization. Our only hope in overcoming the cancerous decadence in our world today is Christ our cornerstone and His perfect examples. Shalom.

PRAYER

Almighty God, we prayer for the protection of our children against pathological, moral and spiritual attacks and diseases which may render them lifeless or a burden to society.
