REFLECTION

Against false prophets is the theme for our reflection. A prophet is one inspired to proclaim the will of God. A false prophet is therefore a person who speaks against the will of God. During the era of Prophet Micah, false prophets closed their eyes to the corrupt practices and injustices carried out by the leaders of Israel. They gave false hope to those who were perpetuating evil and benefited from their corrupt gains. Fake prophets were beneficiaries of the corrupt system therefore they made the people feel at ease believing that the peace of God was with them. The fake prophet we designated fake because they failed to point the people to the will of God which was repentance, justice and care for the vulnerable in society. The fake prophets spoke against those whom they did not derive any benefits from. Prophet Amos exposed their evil deeds, “Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths. (Micah 3:5). Similarly, there are some pastors or preachers who never preach against the injustice, corruption and hardship in the nation. Some refrain from speaking the voice of God against a corrupt government and their appointees because they benefit financially or indirectly from the gains made by these corrupt politicians or leaders. Some have become political party prophets who are in the business of giving false hope or saying good things about the government when it is obvious that all is not well with the nation.

Dear friend, prophets who fail to proclaim God’s will to the nation or leaders of a nation are not exempted from God’s judgement. Pastors, Evangelist and other Christian leaders of our time have a prophetic mandate to call people to repentance and to point them to the will of God, but if they fail to perform their prophetic mandate and rather find themselves in bed with the corrupt leaders then they are false prophets, who must be ready to incur the wrath and judgement of God. It is for this reason, the Lord said concerning false Prophets “Therefore it shall be a night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. The sun shall go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them; the seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God. (Micah 3:6-7). In other words, the Lord will bring upon them, suffering and dishonour.

There is however an assurance that if we decide to pursue God’s way and will regardless of the era and leadership of the time God will remain faithful to us and strengthen us with His Spirit to do that which will save us from His wrath or judgment. Prophet Micah testified to this fact when he declared that “But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.” (Micah 3:8) In other words, God will empower prophets, pastors, preachers who remain faithful to their calling and God’s will for them and His people. His judgement will always be against the fake prophets! Shalom.

PRAYER

Almighty God, continue to empower 21st Century Christian leaders and preachers to effectively execute their prophetic mandate to awaken the conscience of our political and traditional leaders and to call those who are corrupt and unjust to repentance and transformation for your will to be done in our lives as a nation. Amen.
