REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “where are the Angels now?” Angels are represented throughout Christian Bibles as spiritual beings intermediate between God and humans. The Psalmist in comparing human beings and angels has this to say “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour. (Psalms 8:3-5). Human beings are a little lower in nature than angels. Angles have celestial powers but human beings do not.

When the envious and malicious Herod planned to kill Jesus because he felt Jesus was a threat to his kingship, the Angel of the Lord intervened to give direction to Joseph to escape with baby Jesus and Mary to Egypt in Africa. “Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” (Matthew 2:13-15)

Jesus was once upon a time a refugee in Africa, precisely Egypt. This was by virtue of divine direction by the Angel of God. Where are the Angels now and are they still relevant in our lives as believers? I believe Angels are still present in the life of believers and they continually intervene in our lives. We shall recall that in Genesis 18 Abraham received the three Angels in human form. These Angels had a special message for Abraham concerning the fulfilment of God’s promise (the birth of Isaac) and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah for which Lot and his family ought to leave the city. We must prayerfully be expectant so long as we have a relationship with God that God will send His Angels our way to intervene in our situation or direct us to God’s will. Again if Angels are intermediaries between God and humanity in making known God’s will to us and also directing us concerning God’s plan for us then it is possible to encounter Angels in our dreams and revelations and actually meet them in human form. I believe God uses our fellow humans to play the role of Angels in our lives. Nothing is impossible for God to do in our lives. May the Lord send His Angels to bring us good tidings and life-transforming messages or directions. May we also avail ourselves to be used as Angels in the lives of other people. Shalom.

PRAYER

Almighty God, may your Angels visit us and more importantly reveal your will for our lives to us. May the Holy Spirit grant us the spiritual eyes to see and ears to be obedient to God when we receive messages from His Angels.
