REFLECTION
Jesus our Saviour is the theme for our reflection. A saviour is a person who liberates, rescues or redeems, someone or something from danger or difficulty. The three Scripture readings point to Jesus as our Saviour.
Firstly, In the book of Isaiah, we see the hand of God in the affairs of Israel. God continually remembers His covenant with Isreal and reaches out to them to show them mercy and love. Israel has not always been faithful to God yet Isaiah assures the nation that God will remember them in His steadfast love and will save them like He saved their fathers in the past. “For he said, “Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely.” And he became their Savior. In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.” (Isaiah 63:8-9). The birth of Jesus Christ and the event surrounding His birth in Matthew 2:13-23 is the divine manifestation of God’s grand plan not only to save Israel but to save the whole world. God now came down in human form to deal decisively with sin and save all who believe in Jesus Christ. God no longer used any intermediary to express His love and mercy to humanity but through Jesus Christ, He descended into our precarious situation or predicament to show us the way to salvation. Lead us on the path of true righteousness and redemptions. Christmas is the celebration of our Salvation through the incarnation of God into the world of sinful humanity to redeem those who will trust and obey His only Son. Remember in the days of Isaiah, God was more prominent in the affairs of Israel but today God has shown His love to the world through Jesus Christ and this is the essence of His birth.
Secondly, Jesus, our Saviour is waiting on us to make that decision to invite Him into our lives and surrender all to Him. No human being can save his or her fellow human being from sin and death. Jesus is the only one who can save us! It is for this reason the writer of Hebrews wrote that “Since the children (humanity) have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil — and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason, he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” (Hebrews 2:14-18). In other words, Jesus has the power to save you from any form of addiction and sin that has entangled or held you captive these past years, months and days. If you surrender your life to Him this new year and beyond He will set you free from sexual immorality, bitterness, drunkenness, gossip and anything that will prevent you from pleasing God and making heaven. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17) Again Jesus is our Saviour because He assures us that “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:6-7). Dear friend, we are in a new year, it should not be business as usual, get closer to Jesus, our saviour. Let Jesus be your Lord and Saviour in the year 2023 and beyond because “ … in him, we live and move and have our being.’ Acts 17:28.
In summary, we have reflected on Jesus, our Saviour and we have discovered that God has been active in the life of humanity and has ultimately proven His love and saved the world through Jesus Christ, Our Saviour. Again, It is our personal decision to make Jesus, our Saviour, for He is the only one who can save us from our addiction and sins. May the year 2023 and beyond be a year of grace and salvation for us who are lost and spiritually dead as a result of sin. We ask Jesus to come into our lives and become our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
