REFLECTION

Trust for the future is the theme for our reflection. Trust means assured reliance on the ability, strength or promise of someone. Trust is also the confidence, dependence and hope placed in someone because of the person’s abilities. Future is in reference to a time that is to come or it can be used in reference to an event that is yet to happen. Trust for the future means for any endeavour, plans or ambitions we hope to embark on in the future, we must rely on God or place our confidence and hope in Him for its success because He is omniscient and the creator of the universe. He is the God of the past, present and future. It is for this reason, King Solomon admonishes us to “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Dear friend, as part of our new year resolutions, our thoughts and hearts are pregnant with plans we wish to execute or goals we desire to achieve during the year. Unfortunately, many of us hardly pray, fast and seek the face of God by reflecting on His Word and asking for His will to be done in our future. One of the spiritual errors we usually commit in life as believers is that we start executing our future plans but only seek the face of God when we start encountering challenges or begin to experience failure. In other words, we start before inviting God to takeover! Dear friend, the rule is that don’t start anything until you have committed it to God through prayer and have had the conviction according to the revelation recieved through the study of His Word and direction of the Holy Spirit. Let us remember that “man proposes, God disposes” Again Jesus assures us that “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Mark 19:26). Many people have plans to start a new business or expand their existing businesses, buy a land, build a house, buy a car, start a relationship, get married, travel abroad for education and for better opportunities, apply for promotion and many more. Whatever your future plan is, trust the Lord for the future through prayer, fasting and doing His will according to directions given to us in His Word.

Beloved in the Lord, we must trust God to succeed in the future because we are fragile and life is uncertain or ephemeral. Again, we must trust God with our future plans because our enemies also plan to work towards our failure and retrogression in life. We must trust God with our future for He has assured us that “…I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

Beloved in the Lord, it is important to reconsider Solomon’s admonishment to us as we journey with an anticipation of a brighter future, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) The only way to trust the Lord with all your heart is to have faith in Him. The only way to avoid leaning on your own understanding is to study His Word, gain an understanding of His ways and do His will. The only way to acknowledge God in all your ways is through prayer and worship. We must cultivate the spiritual habit of praying, Paul admonishes us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) Let us place our future plans in God’s hand and remain faithful to Him even as He makes straight our paths to success. Shalom.

PRAYER

Almighty God, we acknowledge You as the giver of life and the source of our success, therefore, into Your gracious hands we recommit our lives and plans for the new year. Dear Lord, make straight our path by spiritually equipping us and physically strengthening us to overcome the obstacles and challenges in the new year. Amen.
