REFLECTION
Bread in the wilderness is the theme for our reflection. A wilderness is an empty or pathless tract or region uncultivated and uninhabited by human beings. A wilderness represents a situation of hopelessness and fruitlessness. After the Lord liberated Israel from Egypt, they found themselves in the wilderness as part of their journey. They grumbled at Moses because they were hungry. They experienced a situation of hopelessness and found it impossible to find food in the middle of the wilderness. The Israelites had continued to prove to Moses that they we shortsighted and easily forget that the Lord their liberator and provider is always with them. Regardless of their faithlessness and grumbling, the Lord provided bread for their sustenance. “That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat” (Exodus 16:13-15)
Dear friend, difficult and challenging situation tests our faith and faithfulness to God. We shall experience wilderness in our lives one way or the other but Jesus assures us that ” …do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:31-33) At all times we must remain focused on our relationship with God and trust God’s providence in every situation we find ourselves. Paul again encourages us that “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7). Beloved in the Lord, God knows our needs and he shall provide, instead of grumbling why not pray like Hannah, Daniel and Jesus for God’s will to be done in your life at His own appointed time. The Lord who provided your bread yesterday is the God of today and tomorrow. He is everlasting, therefore, do not let your wilderness experience blur your spiritual sight and faith. Be strong and turn to the Lord in this lent season with hope and have the assurance that “all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) The Lord is with you in your wilderness and He will continue to provide your daily bread and all that you need to succeed to the glory of His Holy Name. Shalom.
PRAYER
Dear Lord, forgive us for grumbling and not putting our faith in You in times of challenges, increase our faith and help us to remain faithful to You at all times even as you provide our daily bread. Amen.
