REFLECTION
“Give us today our daily bread” is the theme for our reflection. Give us today our daily bread is a prayer indicating our reliance on God for sustenance. Metaphorically, bread represents food for our nourishment and since God is the creator of the universe and the sustainer of life, Jesus taught us to always turn to God and pray “Give us today our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11).
Dear friend, God listens to our prayers and supplies our daily bread. I need you to pause for a minute, consider your current age, and ponder over how God has graciously supplied your daily bread and other necessities of life for all these years. Indeed, we must live a life of gratitude because we are beneficiaries of His amazing grace! Our God is faithful and reliable and will never forsake us. It is for this reason, when Elijah became frustrated and desired to die after being exhausted from fleeing from Jezebel, God provided food that will nourish and give him the energy to travel to Horeb where he will be safe. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night. (1 Kings 19:4-9) Beloved in the Lord, are you frustrated and fed up with life because of today’s challenges and scarcity? The Lord who has called us is faithful and will meet us at the point of our needs. The journey ahead may be far and full of obstacles but when we trust and obey the Lord, He shall provide our daily bread and lead us to our “Horeb, the mountain of God” , a destination of hope, peace and restoration. The lent season reminds us of our journey and battles in life, but most importantly, it reminds us that God is our provider and sustainer. It is, for this reason, that David testified about the faithfulness and goodness of the Lord when He wrote that ” The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, and he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Psalms 23. Beloved in the Lord, you are not alone in your struggles, the Lord our provider and sustainer of our daily bread and life is with you. Do your best at work and in your struggles, but most importantly, remain prayerful, hopeful and faithful to the Lord “and my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” Philippians 4:19-20) Shalom.
PRAYER
Almighty God, I am forever grateful for the unending and gracious supply of my daily bread. I continually rely on you and offer myself as a living sacrifice for Your glory. I pray for all who are still struggling to make ends meet, just as You used Your Angel to supply bread and water to Elijah on his journey to Horeb, may you continually bless and enable us to be your Angels in the life of those who are giving up on life’s journey. Amen.
