REFLECTION
“Eternal living: restoring the broken relationship” is the theme for our reflection. Eternal living means a life that transcends our current existence on earth. To restore means to return (someone or something) to a former condition, place, or position. A relationship is a way in which two or more people or things are connected or the state of being connected. A broken relationship is therefore the severance of the connection in the way two more people connect with one another. Eternal living is God’s reward for those who have a relationship with Him. It is God’s desire to keep us connected to Himself so that our relationship with Him will transcend our lives on earth. It is God’s will to restore the broken relationship we have with Him as a result of our disobedience so that we will regain access to eternal life. The Psalmist acknowledged God’s desire or will to draw us to Himself through the restoration of the broken relationship when he wrote that “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbour his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalms 103:8-12)
Dear friend, as God continue to restore us or grants us the grace to be reconnected to Him through His unconditional love and forgiveness, it is required of us to repent and fear the Lord if we desire to have an eternal relationship or life with the Lord. “As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;… from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children” (Psalms 103:13,17). In other words, our broken relationship with the Lord cannot be restored until we have proven to Him that we are willing to repent, obey and fear Him as our Father, creator and sustainer of life. Jesus reminds us that “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21). A believer who fears the Lord will always do His will and the reward is that he or she will remain connected to the Lord in both the ephemeral life and the eternal life. Let us use the lent season to reflect on our relationship with God and to seek His restoration through repentance and fear of the Lord so that we shall be counted worthy of eternal life when Jesus returns the second time.
PRAYER
Merciful and loving Father, forgive us our transgressions and restore us in this lent season and beyond. May the Holy Spirit guide us to live a life of repentance, fear and obedience to Your Word even as we prepare to be ushered into eternal life by our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
