REFLECTION

“The Lord my keeper” is the theme for our reflection. A keeper is a person whose job is to guard or take care of something or someone. “The Lord my keeper” means that the Lord my protector. The Psalmist confesses that in his distress and vulnerability, he turns to the Lord for protection. The Psalmist gives testimony about God’s faithfulness to him as his guardian, protector, or keeper. He does this to encourage the nation Israel and others who may have been going through some kind of distress or challenge. He confesses that “My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”(Psam 121:2)

Dear friend, if our help comes from the LORD who made heaven and earth, then it means God is omnipresent and omniscient, therefore, our security or safety is in His hands. Unlike a human security personnel who may slumber or sleep at his or her post. God understands our struggles and battles and will not forsake us by slumbering or sleeping to our detriment. Indeed, It is for this reason, the Psalmist assures us that “He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:3-4). A story is told of a security personnel who was fired because at midnight, his master woke up to see him sleeping at post while his gun was lying beside him. His Master took the gun and went back to his apartment. In the morning, his master asked him to show him his gun, but he failed to so because it had been taken away from him by someone. Consequently, the gentleman was fired for gross negligence. Beloved in the Lord, our human guardians or bodyguards may slumber or sleep, but the God of heaven and earth is our true keeper or protector. It is for this reason that we must totally entrust our lives into His hands through faith and constantly remain connected to Him through obedience and prayer. For we are further encouraged and assured by the Psalmist that “The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand…The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:5,7-8). To prove that He is our keeper, Jesus again assures us in Matthew 28:20 that “… behold, I am with you always, to end of the age” Beloved in the Lord, you are not alone in your challenges and struggles, you have a keeper, therefore, turn to Him just as Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Deborah, Esther, Daniel, David, Peter, Paul and many others did in the past and through the power of the Holy Spirit they experienced the protective hand of God at the point of the needs. May we experience the mighty hand of the Lord, our Keeper, upon our lives from this lent season and beyond. Shalom.

PRAYER

Almight God, You are our ultimate insurance cover against the misfortunes of life therefore, we surrender our lives into your hands, keep us safe from harm and grant peace and the serenity of mind even in our challenging moments or times of distress. May we always remember the song “He’s got the whole world in His hands” to reassure ourselves that You are our keeper. Amen.
