REFLECTION
Unaware of the abyss is the theme for our reflection. An abyss is a word that has a negative connotation. Literally, it means a bottomless pit but figuratively it is a difficult situation that brings trouble or destruction. Jesus warns believers that at His second coming, the world shall be like an abyss to those who are unprepared. “Immediately after the distress of those days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’.. “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Matthew 24:29,42-44)
Christians or believers have no excuse when Jesus appears because He has already given us the signs and the warning to be ready all the time. “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful…You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised (Hebrews 10:23,36). This is a special admonishment to the youth, the world is increasingly becoming darkened with evil and all manner of abominable practices in the name of freedom and rights. “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them” (Ecclesiastes 12:1) Jesus, reminds us that “Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. (Matthew 24:40-41). Dear friend, would you want to be the one left behind or the one taken away? The season of lent is one of the ways we remind ourselves and continue to prepare for the coming of the Lord, which is a day of glory to those who are prepared. When we have obeyed all that Jesus has taught us and continue to live by the Spirit and not the flesh, we shall not be unaware of the abyss but remain prepared and say with Paul on that fateful day of the Lord that “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day —and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8). Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, enable us to live a heaven-conscious life, trusting and obeying all that Jesus has commanded us to do. Strengthen us to overcome the temptations of this world so that on that day, we shall be told, “‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” (Matthew 25:23) Amen.
