REFLECTION
The “victorious Christ” is the theme for our reflection. To be victorious means to triumph or to be declared a winner. The Victorious Christ means Christ is triumphant over suffering, sin, death and Satan therefore in Him, we have victory over our own challenges and struggles. We shall proceed to reflect on humility as the source of Jesus’ victory.
Beloved in the Lord, Jesus was victorious through humility. Humility is having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s importance. Jesus was victorious because He saw himself as a humble student or a learner. “The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.” (Isaiah 50:4). Jesus walked with the Father as one being instructed, therefore, He listened to the Father and endured persecution in the hands of His enemies in total humility, trusting God to vindicate Him. “He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me! It is the Sovereign LORD who helps me. Who will condemn me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up. (Isaiah 50:8-9).
Jesus demonstrated His humility during His triumphant entry to Jerusalem to fulfil His Mission on earth. He rode on a donkey rather than a horse. He is a humble King who came to save the world not through chariots and war horses but on a humble, gentle and submissive donkey! We are told “The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” (Matthew 21:6-9). Paul re-affirms Jesus’ victory through humility when he wrote that “he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death —even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:7-11).
Beloved in the Lord, if Jesus has been victorious through humility then we must also follow His perfect example. Let us “have the same mindset as Christ Jesus… (Philippians 2:5) Let us endure suffering and agony in humility totally trusting God to vindicate us and grant us victory in our challenges and struggles. Jesus assures us that “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for, in the same way, they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:11-12). No matter your struggles as a believer, be rest assured that you are not alone, the Victorious Christ is with you and you shall overcome the storm.
In summary, the theme for our Palm Sunday reflection is “The Victorious Christ” In our reflection we have learnt that the source of Jesus’ victory is humility and obedience to His father as one who is being instructed and one who did not count equality with God but came to us on a donkey to save us. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to live a life of humility even as the Lord continue to grant us victory over our sin, spiritual forces and enemies. Amen.
