God puts a song in our hearts is the theme for our reflection. Deborah and Barak sang a song to recount their victory against Jabin, the King of Canaan and his commander, Sisera. In the song, they glorified God “… may all your enemies perish, LORD! But may all who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength.” (Judges 5:31)
One of the ways of expressing our joy, victory or achievement is through the art of music. Music enables us to glorify God for His faithfulness to us. Music composition and singing are unique gifts given to humanity by God. We are to use songs to praise, worship and adore God and to celebrate His goodness in our lives. Again, Music is one of the ways of preserving history, and this was evident in the song of Deborah and Barak. Their song captured the names of the key actors during the battle and the victory of Israel over Canaan. Generations yet unborn will have the privilege of singing the song and learning the history of Israel and God’s redemptive power in the life of the nation.
Beloved in the Lord, we must develop the habit of singing in corporate worship services and during private devotions. Paul encourages us to “Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:19-20). Again, we are encouraged to learn from the Psalmist when he wrote that “It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, LORD; I sing for joy at what your hands have done. (Psalms 92:1-4). Dear friend, if God can put songs in our hearts then singing to glorify God is a divine act and calling of every believer. Unfortunately, some believers do not understand the importance and power of music and singing hence they sit down unconcerned or show less enthusiasm when hymns and other spiritual songs are being sung at Church. Some churches have hymn books yet some members of these churches do know their hymns and do now show interest in learning them. It is important to note that these songs carry special grace because they were written through revelation and inspiration by the Holy Spirit. In other words, God put these songs in our hearts. These songs are therapeutic and can console us in challenging moments of our lives and make our faith stronger in the midst of adversities. Dear friend, if you have not yet paid attention to the value of our hymns and other spiritual songs then I invite you to start listening to them and meditate with them even as you sing them with great enthusiasm, faith and hope. We saw the power of singing hymns and other spiritual songs in the life of Paul and Silas when they were in prison, “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.” (Acts 16:25-26) We experience the manifestation of God’s power through the Holy Spirit when our hearts are united in singing songs to glorify God. Beloved in the Lord, we are greatly encouraged to compose and sing songs as our testimony of God’s faithfulness and presence in our lives. We have every reason to sing songs of praise all the time because His grace is ever sufficient. Shalom
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, may we never be ungrateful. but through the gift and the power of music, glorify and continually give testimony of God’s faithfulness in our lives and to the world.
