REFLECTION

“A wise woman” is the theme for our reflection. To be wise mean to have or show experience, knowledge, and good judgement, however, to be wise in the Lord means to have a relationship with God to gain knowledge and understanding of His ways and purpose for our lives. “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6). A wise woman in the light of our Scripture reading and reflection is a woman who has knowledge and understanding of God’s ways and words. Before Samson was born, his parents had an encounter with an Angel concerning his birth. After the supernatural occurrence, Manoah, Samson’s father panicked “We are doomed to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen God!” But his wife answered, “If the LORD had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this.” (Judges 13:22-23). The answer from Manoah’s wife demonstrated the fact that she is wise. She had knowledge and understanding of God’s actions in the lives of His people. In other words, the woman showed that she was wise through her knowledge, understanding, experience, and proclamation about God’s intervention and work in the lives of those He favours.

Beloved in the Lord, it must be our greatest desire in marriage to have a spouse whose wisdom is derived from his or her knowledge, experience and reverence for the Lord. We are greatly admonished that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10). Just like Manoah or Samson’s father, we need a spouse like Samson’s mother who is wise in the things of God and is able to make meaningful contributions to our lives. A wise spouse’s presence in our lives draws us closer to God and enables us to journey together in a relationship which has God as the foundation. Manoah panicked but the wisdom expressed by his wife based on her knowledge and experience of God certainly allayed Manoah’s fears and consequently gave him a deeper and better understanding of God’s purpose in their lives. Dear friend, it is such a joy to have a spouse who is wise in the ways of God. Every husband needs a wise wife and every wife needs a wise husband. This is the balanced equation of marriage. Wisdom is the outcome of having a relationship with the Lord. Aside from love, we need a spouse who is wise to make our marriages work. Beloved in the Lord if we desire wisdom to make our marriages work effectively and be a blessing then we need to have a relationship with God. Shalom.

Dear Lord, bless those who are yet to marry with wise spouses and help those of us who are already married to continually grow in godly wisdom to make our marriages a purpose-driven one. Amen.
