Most African leaders lack selflessness and integrity in their DNA. While selflessness and integrity are integral elements of governance in developed countries, corruption and nepotism remain a substantial part of governance in most African countries. African leaders continue to depend on the developed countries for economic support and other forms of aid yet they are unwilling to learn and apply the same basic principles of fiscal discipline and effective economic management from their benefactors.

Without the spirit of selflessness and integrity, Africa and for that matter Ghana will remain impoverished while the very people responsible for our woes continue to impose burdensome taxes, indulge in blame games and politicization of important issues that border on the livelihood of citizens and the destiny of the nation. How big and complex are African nations that political leaders are unable to manage their resources and economies effectively? Our leaders are unable to stop the destruction of our water bodies, forest and arable farming lands through illegal mining and other harmful environmental practices yet they keep running to other nations who have been able to effectively manage their resources and economies to maximise the economic growth and fortunes of their citizens. Who bewitched Africa?! I am convinced that the biggest challenge to Africa’s development is poor leadership. “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice;
when the wicked rule, the people groan.” (Proverbs 29:2) May the Lord raise for Africa, a new crop of righteous, incorruptible, competent, sensitive and empathetic leaders who possess the qualities of selflessness and integrity to revive Africa and leads us onto the part of prosperity. Shalom.

1. What is your contribution to nation-building as a citizen of your country?

2. As a leader in your own small circle, what impacts are you making?
