REFLECTION
Saving power is the theme for our reflection. Saving power means Jesus has the power to rescue or redeem us. Matthew exposes the weakness of humanity and proves that Jesus has the power to save those who call on Him or put their trust in Him. We shall reflect on the fact that Jesus has the power to save us in all aspects of our lives.
First, the saving power of Jesus overcomes sicknesses and spiritual attacks. Matthew reported that Jesus healed Peter’s mother and others and delivered many from demon possession and attack. (Matthew 8:14-17). Sickness is caused by a number of factors that includes but are not limited to demonic or spiritual attacks. No matter the cause of our ailment or sickness, we have the assurance that Jesus has the saving power to give heal us and grant us victory over internal or external factors that may want to wreak havoc on our bodies and health. Because of our faith and relationship with Jesus, His saving power is at work in us to overcome sicknesses and spiritual attacks. It was for reason, Peter was able to heal the lame man when he said to him “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk (Acts 3:6-8). Apart from our physical predicament in terms of sicknesses, Paul also reminds us we need the saving power of Jesus through the armour of God because “… our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12). My dear friend, regardless of our physical and spiritual predicaments or challenges, the saving power of Jesus is our refuge and source of liberation. It is for this reason, we must always remain connected to Him through faith, for “…those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
Second, apart from our physical and spiritual weakness which can be overcome by the saving power of Jesus, Jesus also has the power to save us from natural disasters. Natural disasters may hit us at any time but Jesus assures us that when natural disasters come in their fierce turbulence, we should have faith and put our trust in Him for He has the power to save us from harm. During the turbulence caused by the wind, his disciples panicked out of fear but He said to them “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Matthew 8:26-27) Dear friend, faith overcomes fear and enables us to experience the saving power of Jesus, it is for this reason, Jesus said “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26). In other words, with fear and human weakness it is impossible to overcome sicknesses, spiritual attacks and natural disasters but with faith we are able to experience the saving power of Jesus and the impossible will become possible in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Dear friend in the Lord, I do not know the violent wind or storm causing turbulence and fear in your marriage, academics, business, employment and other areas of your life but what I do know, believe and continue to experience is that ” all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28). Have faith and continue trusting Jesus and never give up in your struggles and predicaments, Jesus is with you and will rebuke the wind and the waves troubling your life through His saving power. Truly, He has assured us that “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10) . Shalom
