REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “a child heir of God”. An heir is one entitled by law to inherit property from another person or succeed to a hereditary rank or title. Paul uses the legal right of a child heir to explain God’s love and gift of salvation to those who are saved through our Lord Jesus Christ.
A child is considered a minor who lacks the capacity to manage an inheritance because he or she is considered ignorant or unable to make a sound judgement by law. It was the duty of the steward, guardians or trustee to hold the property for the beneficial interest of the child until such a time that the child is of age and considered by law to have the capacity to inherit and manage his or her property. The meaning of this legal provision to our salvation is that the law or the principles of this world were guiding us in our ignorance as trustees, but God’s purpose for us is for us to be enlightened, be saved and inherit the Kingdom of God. It is for this reason, God sent Jesus into the world to deliver us from the hands of the law which was the guardian or trustee which kept us from having access or becoming heirs to the eternal estate or inheritance of God which is eternal life. “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. (Galatians 4:4-7). In other words, Paul says “But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:25-29)
Dear friend, because we are in Christ we have now grown into maturity by His grace and have become child heirs of God. As child heirs of God, we have been greatly admonished by Hebrews 10:23-25, to“…hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. In everything we do as child heirs of God let us remember that we are only in the world but not of the world therefore we must be spiritually focused on living a life worthy of our calling as child heirs of God by following the perfect example of our Lord Jesus Christ through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Shalom,
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, strengthen us to maintain our status as child heirs of God through our daily living and dedication to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
