The theme for our reflection is “God being God”. God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. (Westminster Catechism 1674). “Being” is the present participle of ” to be”,. “Being” is used in the continuous tense, therefore, “God being God” means God never changes. He is constantly God every moment. He does not changes in nature but remains a constant reality. We shall deliberate on the question, in which way do we experience “God being God” in our lives?.
Beloved in the Lord, the nature, value and quality of a substance is clearly seen and appreciated when compared with another substance. Paul compared the nature of human beings to the nature of God and concluded with the following words, if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself. (2 Timothy 2:13) To be faithless means to be disloyal. Faithless applies to any failure to keep a promise or pledge or any breach of allegiance or loyalty. We human beings are inconsistent in our nature hence, we could become faithless in our relationship with one another and with God. For instance, some husbands and wives are faithless in marriage. They are disloyal and untrustworthy in their marriages. Paul teaches us an important truth about God when he explained that God stops being God the moment He becomes faithless like us. That is why Paul said that “He remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself. (2 Timothy 2:13) In other words, what makes us believe and experience God’s presence in our lives is His never failing steadfast love and faithfulness. Indeed, we experience “God being God” in our lives through His faithfulness to us.
From the time of Adam to the time of Christ and to our very dispensation, sinful humanity has always experienced God from generation to generation, because He is faithful. When Adam and Eve were faithless and disobedient, God still remain faithful to them by providing for them. “The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. (Genesis 3:21). During the time of Noah, when God ought to have destroyed all human beings, He was faithful and preserved the human race through Noah and his family. “The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled…But Noah found favour in the eyes of the LORD. ” Genesis 6:5-6,8). The faithfulness of God towards humanity was seen when He had a covenant with Abraham so that out of Abraham’s generation the entire world will be saved. The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, (Genesis 12:1-2). Again, we see the faithfulness of God as a covenant-keeping God, when He called Moses in order to use Him to liberate the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. God said to Moses “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” (Exodus 3:6) This phrase means God is a faithful and a covenant-keeping God. Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13-14). Dear friend, “I AM WHO I AM” means God is the ultimate reality and existence, no human being can say I AM WHO I AM because we change, we are fallible, feeble and eventually die. However, God is constant in His faithfulness, glory and power, He is “I AM WHO I AM” The History of Israel is simply the demonstration of God’s existence and faithfulness in the affairs of sinful humanity. Regardless of the faithlessness of Israel, Jeremiah still assures them that “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23). Beloved in the Lord, the climax of God’s demonstration of His faithfulness to the whole of humanity is when He became flesh and walked the face of the earth through His Son Jesus Christ, who is the Word. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5). Because God is constantly being God, Jesus His son shared this same attribute or nature with Him. It was for this reason, the writer of Hebrews wrote that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8) This means that God’s faithfulness through Jesus remains unchangeable from generation to generation. Dear friend, I want you to look back from where you started life and see how the Lord had been faithful to you, regardless of the challenges, He continues to hold our hands and provides us with life, good health and the basic necessities of life. Is this God not faithful?
Beloved in Lord, God being God, assures us that we can always put our faith and hope in Him and He will never disappoint us. It is for this reason, Isaiah assures us that “but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31) Job also confirmed the faithfulness of God even in His afflictions therefore he said “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. 26 And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God,” (Job 19:25-26). Dear friend what is causing you to become faithless in your relationship with this faithful God. We are being called to turn to Him and experience His glory and faithfulness in our lives. “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14-16). Dear friend, as God continues to be God in your life through His faithfulness, have you also been faithful to Him? Do we acknowledge Him in our lives? Do we proclaim His steadfast love and faithfulness to the world? God is still inviting us through the prophet Malachi to turn to Him. He assures us of His faithfulness when He says to us, “…you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts” (Malachi 3:7)
In summary, we have reflected on the theme, “God being God.” We have learnt that”God being God” means that God is unchangeable in His steadfast love and faithfulness to humanity. Unlike us, God has been and continues to be faithful from generation to generation. We are being called upon to repent from our faithlessness and turn to God by being faithful to Him all the days of our lives. Shalom.
