REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is sound sleep. To have a sound sleep means to have a good, restful, peaceful, still and silent sleep. Sound sleep is sleeping without any form of disturbance or distress. The synonym or another phrase to describe sound sleep is captured in Proverbs 3:24, “…your sleep will be sweet.” (Proverbs 3:24). We shall examine the fact that we experience sound sleep if we preserve sound judgement and discretion.
Dear friend, when we preserve sound judgement and discretion according to the wisdom and understanding of God we shall experience sound sleep. We are told by King Solomon that “My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;… When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. (Proverbs 3:21,24) In other words, a person with a guilty conscience can not experience sound sleep. Again, a person who is involved in the perversion of justice or whose decision or discretion leads to injustice can not experience sound sleep. In addition, a person whose decision or choices is contrary to the will of God can not experience sound sleep. To experience sound or sweet sleep as a believer, we must do the will of God to keep a good conscience by always preserving sound judgment and discretion in our decisions. How can we preserve sound judgement and discretion? We can only preserve sound judgement if we have godly wisdom and understanding. How then do we possess godly wisdom and understanding in order to preserve sound judgement and discretion so that we can experience sound sleep? We can only possess true and godly wisdom if we fear God and know Him for “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10). If we fail to fear God and know Him through the reading and studying of His word, we can not make sound judgement and discretion that will guarantee a sound sleep.
Beloved in the Lord, our hearts and minds will be burdened with guilt if we fail to apply God’s wisdom and understanding in our judgment and discretion. When Adam and Eve failed to abide by God’s wisdom which is His commandment, they experience guilt as a result of sin or disobedience (Genesis 3:7-13) Joseph’s brothers were restless because of their guilt and past sin again Joseph. “When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?” (Genesis 50:15). Isaiah reminds us that “… the wicked are like the tossing sea; for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt. 21 There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.” (Isaiah 57:20-21). After Peter had preached to the people, they realised that all these while they have been lost, “Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:37-38). Dear friend, we shall experience sound sleep if we repent and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Jesus is the Wisdom and understanding of God which has been made manifest in the flesh. It is. for this reason. John wrote that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4) In other words, the Word is Jesus Christ, hence “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16), it is for this purpose we are assured that “… we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1) It is this peace that gives sound sleep to the believer even in the midst of calamities and challenges. When we have a relationship with Jesus, who is the Living Word and continue to read and study the Scripture, which is the written Word, we shall gain wisdom and understanding which will enable us to preserve sound judgment and discretion so that we shall continue to experience sound sleep.
In summary, we have reflected on the theme “sound sleep”. We have established the fact that we shall experience sound sleep if we preserve sound judgement and discretion borne out of the wisdom and understanding of God’s Word. Shalom.
PRAYER
1. Let us pray for godly wisdom and understanding to be able to preserve sound judgment and discretion even in difficult and temptatious moments.
2. Let us pray for the grace to experience sound sleep even as we seek God’s wisdom and understanding to preserve sound judgement and discretion in our lives.
3. Let us pray for those who are sick and going through excruciating pain, and as a result are unable to experience sound sleep. Let us pray for the Lord to heal them.
4. Let us pray for those who are unable to experience sound sleep because of challenges in their lives.
May the Holy Spirit grant us sound sleep even as we are strengthened to preserve sound judgement and discretion according to the knowledge of His wisdom and understanding of His Word. Amen
