REFLECTION
Good news for the unsure is the theme for our reflection. Good news refers to information or events that convey positive, favorable, or uplifting outcomes or developments. It is news that brings joy, relief, happiness, or optimism to individuals or a wider community. Good News, according to the Gospels or as recorded by the Apostles, is the message about the Christ Event leading to our salvation. A person who is unsure is one who has doubts or does not believe in what he or she hears and sometimes sees. For instance, we are told “… the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted.” (Matthew 28:16-17). In other words, some were unsure if the person they were seeing was Jesus. We shall reflect on the fact that the resurrection of Christ and the great commission adds up to the Christ Event to cure our doubts about the Lordship of Jesus.
Beloved in the Lord. The Christ Event is theological term. The Christ Event that sums up the Gospel are His incarnation, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. The unsure or those in doubt are those who witnessed His ministry, suffering, and death but did not witness the resurrection. The good news was that some of the disciples had their doubts cleared or believed when “Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20). Beloved in the Lord, Jesus is the only one who has the power or authority to make such a declaration and command. If Jesus had not risen from the dead (ressurection), He could not have commissioned or given us the command to go out into the world to baptise in the name of the Trinity and to teach others to follow His perfect example. It is the good news of Jesus’ resurrection and the great commission coupled with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that kept the disciples preaching and baptizing people fearlessly. The hitherto doubtful or unsure disciples were now moved to a state of certainty, believe, and empowerment through the event of the resurrection and great commission. It is for this reason we can confidently say that we have good news for the unsure or unbelieving disciples or followers of Jesus even in our time. Beloved in the Lord, are you still in doubt of the Lordship of the Lordship of Jesus Christ over your life? I invite you today to give Him a chance in your life, make Him Your Lord and Saviour and trust in His promise that “…behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
In summary, we have deliberated on the theme “Good news for the unsure” We have underscored the fact that the resurrection of Christ and the great commission adds up to the Christ Event to cure our doubts about the Lordship of Jesus in our lives. This is the good news for the unsure or doubtful. Shalom.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, may Your resurrection and our mission as preachers of the Gospel cure our doubts and draw us closer to You with certainty and hope for the eternal life. Amen.
