Theme: Reaping what you sow.
The theme for our reflection is “reaping what you sow”. Reaping what you sow means a person will experience the future consequences of his or her present actions. We shall reflect on the fact that the theme “reaping what you sow” is a universal principle established by God.
“Reaping what you sow” is a universal and divine principle established by God to hold each one of us accountable for his or her actions, whether good or bad. Paul brings this principle to the notice of the Galatians when he wrote, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:7-9) Beloved in the Lord, we may escape the immediate consequences of our actions but we cannot escape the eternal consequences of our actions. Some people have escaped the consequences of their actions because of power and political influence. Again, some have avoided the consequences of their actions because of corruption and injustice. Dear friend, you may have committed evil and crimes and seem to have gotten away with it but let us remember that “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23). We are only sojourners in this world, our final destination is eternity. We have two gates of eternity. They are eternal death and eternal life. Eternal death is hell and eternal life is heaven. Whatever actions and decisions we take from our date of birth to our date of death will determine the kind of eternity we shall reap. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:10). Jesus ultimately cautions us that we shall reap what we sow when He said in the Book of Revelations, “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.” (Revelation 22:12-15)
Dear friend, it is better to reap what one sows in the flesh than to go to hell on the day of judgment. Although the robber reaped what he sowed in the flesh in the form of suffering and dying on the cross, he received eternal life when he repentantly said “We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:41-43 The Good News for those of us who are still alive is that “…God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17). We are in the dispensation or period of grace therefore Jesus says “The time has come,”…“The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15) Paul further admonishes us. “I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2). Let us sow seeds according to the will of God so that we will reap eternal life, for Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21)
In summary, we have deliberated on the theme ” Reaping what you sow” We have learnt that reaping what one sows is a universal principle established by God which has an eternal consequence of either eternal life or death. We are to sow that which is of God to reap the eternal life.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, strengthen us to sow and reap only that which is of God in our lives. Amen.
