God’s faithfulness is the theme for our reflection. To be faithful means to be loyal, steadfast and trustworthy. God’s faithfulness means God does not change in His loyalty, steadfastness, love and trustworthiness to those who put their trust in Him. We shall reflect on the fact that God’s faithfulness is eternal but a human being’s faithfulness is ephemeral.
Beloved in the Lord why put your trust in a mere mortal whose faithfulness is ephemeral or temporary instead of putting your trust in God whose faithfulness is eternal and never fails? The psalmist greatly encourages us to put our trust in God’s faithfulness when he wrote, “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day, their plans come to nothing. 5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God. 6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—he remains faithful forever. (Psalms 146:3-6). Dear friend in the Lord, who do you put your hope and trust in, is it your spouse, children, siblings or your benefactor. Many of us experience great disappointment, shock and even irreparable damage to our health because we depend on the faithfulness of God’s creation rather than the faithfulness of God, the creator, who created us and loves us unconditionally through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Growing up as young children, our father consistently reminded us that we should never put our hopes on him and our mother as the only source of sustenance in life but rather have faith in God as our provider and sustainer because as parents and mere mortals, they could die and leave us at any time. My parents nurtured us to trust God because His faithfulness never fails or ceases. Jeremiah testified to God’s faithfulness as the only source of hope for humanity when he said “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. (Lamentations 3:22-26) Paul also drew our attention to the unfailing and eternal faithfulness of God to those who are in Christ when he wrote, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?…No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35, 37-39). The greatest act of God’s faithfulness to sinful humanity is captured in John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17). Beloved in the Lord, no matter how a person may be faithful to you, it will surely come to an end but if we put our hope and trust in God, we shall experience His faithfulness both in this life and the eternal life. The question is how faithful are we to God? Upon all the Lord continues to do for us we continue to be unfaithful to him in many ways. Some of us fail to spend just a few minutes of our time daily to acknowledge God’s faithfulness and express our gratitude to Him. Some of us are inconsistent and unfaithful to God in our worship lives. We go to the house of the Lord as and when we are pleased. We worship God on our own terms and conditions and not as mere mortals who owe God everything including our very lives. We have been unfaithful in giving to the Church for the furtherance of God’s mission and we have also been unfaithful in being good stewards of God’s blessings by supporting others who are in need. The good news is that it is never too late to turn to the Lord. According to the prophet Zechariah, “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the LORD Almighty. (Zechariah 1:3) Similarly, Jesus admonishes us, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you…” (John 15:4). Take a few minutes of your time, look back and reflect on God’s faithfulness to you. With all that He has done for you, what have you done for Him as a sign of your gratitude? Let us repent and completely surrender our lives to Jesus, our Lord and Saviour even as we continue to be beneficiaries of God’s eternal love, mercy and faithfulness.
In summary, we have meditated on the theme, “God’s faithfulness.” We have learnt that God’s faithfulness is eternal but a human being’s faithfulness is ephemeral, therefore we must put our hope and trust in God. Shalom.
