(MATTHEW 5:17-22)
REFLECTION
The law explained – how can we become righteous?” is the theme for our reflection. Jesus explained to His audience what it means to become righteous through the obedience of the law. We shall reflect on the fact that since Jesus is the fulfilment of the law, following His perfect example will make us righteous before God.
Beloved in the Lord, for us to fulfil the law and to be reckoned as righteous, we must follow the perfect example of Jesus Christ. Jesus said “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17) In other words, Jesus came to teach us how to please God through the obedience of His law. By fulfilling the requirement of the law, Jesus became the embodiment of God’s law or the Word of God. Our only duty is to follow His perfect example and be accepted by God as His righteous people. Jesus cautioned His audience not to follow the hypocritical attitude of the religious leaders and teachers which does not lead to righteousness when He said “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20) In other words, our fellow human beings cannot be our perfect example or standard of obedience that leads to righteousness, Jesus remains our perfect example since He has been able to fulfil the law and have become our salvation.
Our religious leaders may guide and teach us to follow God’s Word but to experience God’s Word and become righteous we must first and foremost have a relationship with Jesus Christ. We must have faith in Him and make Him our Lord and Saviour because “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1-4). It is only through Jesus that we are made righteous and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a life pleasing to God. It is the Holy Spirit that enables us to continue to fulfil God’s law by following the perfect image of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are to remain steadfast even as we continue to follow the perfect example of Jesus Christ in fulfilling the law as God’s righteous people. We must have nothing to do with the works of darkness and sinful desires of the world in our state of righteousness. To be righteous means to live like Jesus and be guided by the Holy Spirit every day of our lives.
In summary, we have reflected on the theme “The law explained – how can we become righteous?” We have discovered that since Jesus is the fulfilment of the law, following His perfect example will make us righteous before God. Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, continue to strengthen us to follow the perfect example of Jesus Christ in obeying and fulfilling the commandment of God. May we remain righteous through the obedience of the law through our Lord Jesus Christ even as we await His second coming. Amen.
