WHERE THERE’S A WILL

REFLECTION

“Where there’s is a will” is the theme for our reflection. The theme is part of an idiomatic expression. The complete phrase of the idiomatic expression is “where there is a will, there’s a way. The word will in the context of our theme means the firm desire and determination to have something done or to succeed. “Where there’s will, there’s way” means if a person or group of people are determined or have the firm desire to achieve something, they will succeed regardless of the obstacles. It is important to note that the power of the will is God’s gift to humanity to enable us achieve greatness. We shall reflect on the fact that where there’s will, there is a way to overcome policies and laws that are bedeviled with inequality in our societies.

Beloved in the Lord, where there’s will, there is a way to overcome policies and laws that are bedeviled with inequality in our societies. We see the determination and firm desire of the five daughters of Zelophehad that changed the law concerning land or property inheritance so far as women are concerned. Hitherto, the law had always favoured male children over female children. In other words men were entitled to inherit property but women were not. Zelophehad was also Jew and a decedent of Josheph except that he had no male child. “…The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the chiefs and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin. And he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.” Moses brought their case before the LORD. And the LORD said to Moses, “The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.” (Number 27:1-8) Had these women accepted their fate or sat down hopelessly allowing the status quo to continue they would not have had assess to their father’s estate or properties.

Beloved in the Lord, we must follow the examples of these bold women who stood for their rights and legally fought against an unjust system. In the power of unity and mutual determination we can overcome inequality and injustice in world today. The fight against systemic and institutionalized inequality must not be left only to the victims but but fought by godly men and women who understand and values the essence of human dignity. If we call ourselves Christians but support an unjust system because we are beneficiaries it, then our Christianity is greatly questionable and our faith is incomplete. Indeed we are hypocrites because we preach love and practice otherwise. Moses could have defended the existing system because it favoured men and he was man, but he laid the petition of the unfairly treated women before God and God delivered a judgement that changed the fate of women in the Jewish society concerning issues bothering on Inheritance. Similarly we are called upon to support the fight against injustice in our churches and societies. It is part of our faith and our Christian stewardship to fight the course of the defenseless or vulnerable in our societies. You do not necessarily need to be a lawyer or judge to do so. In your small corner, you can add your voice to the masses as Christian through your social media handles or space. The Church can teach on topics related to issues of inequality in our societies to help members appreciate God’s will for them.

My dear friend in the Lord, where there’s will, there’s a way, it for this reason we must begin to reexamine our ecclesiastical (Church) and state laws and politicies and push for reviews in areas that unfairly affect the rights and dignity of affected parties in our societies.

In summary, we have deliberated on the theme “Where there’s a will” We have discovered Where there’s will, there is a way to overcome policies and laws that are bedeviled with inequality in our societies. Shalom.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, grant us the wisdom to identify unjust laws and systems, and strengthen us to work together in the spirit of unity to overcome them so that the rights and dignity of all will be protected. Amen
