YOUR WORDS CAN BE HELPFUL IN BUILDING OTHERS. (EPHESIANS 4:25-32). ADVENT REFLECTIONS
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “your words can be helpful in building others” The theme means our speech can be beneficial to the development of those we communicate with. We shall reflect on the fact that we must he good stewards of the tongue given to us by God for speech or verbal communication.
Beloved in the Lord, the tongue plays an important role in speech or words formation. Every single word that comes out of our mouth has a purpose during our communication with others. The purpose of speech is to enable our listener or listeners to understand our intention and opinion about them or others. Paul, as part of his instructions to the Ephesians, admonished them to use the tongue responsibly in their communication with one another, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29). Indeed, the stewardship of the tongue and the words that comes out of our mouths are so important that Jesus cautioned us in Matthew 5:22 that “…anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell…” One of the easiest sins we commit either knowingly or unknowingly, consciously or unconsciously is through our words or speech. It is for this reason we must always pray with the psalmist that “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)
As Christians, whether we are angry or not, happy or sad, we must be good stewards of the tongue and learn to follow Paul’s instruction to the Colossians when he wrote “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:6). James further admonishes to be good stewards of the tongue or be measurd in our speech when he wrote, “With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, these things ought not to be so.” (James 3:9-10). Beloved in the Lord, as disciples of Christ, our words can help build our spouses, children, members of our congregations, our neighbours, colleagues at work and even strangers spiritually and emotionally. One of the ways we can reflect the image of Christ is to greatly build and encourage others through our speech our or verbal communication. What we say to others is a reflection of our faith and obedience to the Word of God. It is for this reason, we must endeavour to build others up in every situation we find ourselves as Christians who understand the Word of Truth and have the perfect image of Christ in us.
Know that we shall be judged by the words that come out of our mouth when Jesus comes again, the advent seaon gives us another opportunity to reflect on the words that comes out of our mouth and seek the help of the Holy Spirit in becoming good stewards of our tongues. It is our Christian responsibility to live at peace and in harmony with others, and this possible when we use words that can be helpful in building others. It is also important to mention that using words that builds others glories God. In other words, Jesus says, “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
In summary, we have deliberated on the theme “your words can be helpful building others.” We have discovered that we must he good stewards of the tongue given to us by God for speech or verbal communication so that those we converse with daily will be greatly encouraged and blessed by our words. Shalom.
