COME AND SEE! (JOHN 1:43–51)
REFLECTION
“Come and see!” is the theme of our reflection. It is a passionate, urgent invitation extended by someone who has discovered a person or truth of infinite value and desires to share this good news selflessly for the benefit of others. Today, we reflect on the fundamental truth that we can only truly say “Come and see!” once we have personally encountered Jesus as the Messiah.
Beloved in the Lord, before we can invite others to witness the glory of Christ, we must first cultivate a personal relationship with Him. We must be convinced of His divinity. After Philip experienced a personal encounter with Jesus and believed, “Philip found Nathanael and told him, ‘We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’ ‘Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?’ Nathanael asked. ‘Come and see,’ said Philip.” (John 1:45–46)
Without the bedrock of conviction that Jesus is the Messiah, our evangelism will lack power and boldness. Unlike Philip, many today sit within the pews of the Church yet lack a genuine, transformative relationship with Jesus; consequently, they remain silent, unable to proclaim, “I have found the Messiah, come and see!” Contrast this with the Samaritan woman. Upon her encounter with Christ, she “…went back to the town and said to the people, ‘Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?’ They came out of the town and made their way toward him… Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony… They said to the woman, ‘We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world.’” (John 4:28–30, 39, 42) My dear friend, do you truly believe that Jesus is the Saviour of the world? If you do, when was the last time you passionately invited someone to encounter Him? While we do not possess the power to convert souls—as regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit—our divine mandate is to extend the invitation. We are called to lead others to the feet of Jesus through the message of repentance and faith. This is why Jesus commanded in the Great Commission: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:18–20)
It is also crucial to recognise that we are not merely inviting people to meet a historical figure; we are inviting them to encounter the omniscient God and the ultimate destiny changer. He possesses perfect knowledge of every soul and continues to call humanity through us in this present age. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He remarked, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” (John 1:47–49)
When we extend the invitation to others to “come and see” Jesus, many may wonder how they ought to respond or what the ultimate benefit of accepting Him as Lord and Saviour truly is. The answer is clear: we must approach Jesus in faith. The reward for this step of faith is nothing less than an experience of the glory of God and the gift of eternal salvation. It was for this very reason that Jesus promised Nathanael: “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.” (John 1:50–51)
THE CALL TO ACTION
You are a “Philip,” and there is a “Nathanael” in your life right now waiting for your invitation. Do not wait for a formal church programme or a scheduled evangelism drive. Sharing Christ is not a seasonal event; it is the daily heartbeat of a believer’s life.
We must seize every conversation and utilise every tool at our disposal—be it a face-to-face chat, a WhatsApp message, or a social media post—to bring the lost to the saving knowledge of Christ. Let your primary resolution for this year be this: to win souls for the Kingdom within your home, your workplace, and your community.
Today, I challenge you: scroll through your phone contacts or visit a neighbour. Identify one person who needs the Messiah and boldly extend the invitation to “come and see!” Start now; the harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.
SUMMARY
We have reflected on the transformative theme, “Come and See!” We have established that it is our solemn responsibility to point others to Jesus. However, we cannot authentically say “Come and see!” unless we have first tasted and seen His goodness for ourselves.
PRAYER
Almighty Holy Spirit, ignite within us a fire that cannot be quenched. Strengthen us to overcome the timidity, distractions, and challenges that hinder us from inviting others to Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. Grant us an unshakeable boldness, a divine confidence, and a relentless will to preach the Gospel at every opportunity. May our lives be living testimonies that draw the lost to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, so that His Kingdom may be enlarged. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
