COME AND SEE! (JOHN 1:43-46)
REFLECTION
Come and see! is the theme for our reflection. “Come and see!” is a passionate invitation given by a person who has discovered something or someone of worth and is desirous to selflessly share this piece of information or good news with others for their mutual benefit. We shall reflect on the fact that we can say to others, “Come and see!” when we have first encountered Jesus as the Messiah.
Beloved in the Lord, before we invite others to come and see Jesus, we must first of all, have a personal relationship or encounter with Him and come to believe that He is indeed the Messiah. After Philip had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and believed in Him as the Messiah, “Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote —Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. (John 1:45-46)
Without the belief and conviction that Jesus is the Messiah we cannot effectively and boldly evangelize. Unlike Philip, there are many who find themselves in the Church but have not yet had a personal relationship with Jesus, therefore, they are unable to tell others ” I have found the Messiah, come and see!” When the Samaritan woman had a personal encounter with Jesus, she “…went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him…Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony…They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” (John 4:28-30,39,42) My dear friend, do you believe that Jesus is the Messiah or the Saviour of the World? If you do, then when was the last time you invited someone passionately to come and see Jesus through the sharing of the Gospel or Good News? We do not have the power to convert people, it is the power of the Holy Spirit that brings about regeneration or rebirth in the life of the repentant sinner. Our divine responsibility is to go out there to invite people to come and see Jesus through repentance and faith. It is for this reason that during the great commission, Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:18-20)
Dear friend, you are a Philip, and there is a Nathanael out there waiting for your invitation to come and see Jesus. Let us not wait until there are special evangelism programmes organised in our congregation before we invite people to Jesus. Evangelism or inviting people to come to Jesus is an everyday affair in the life of a believer. We must seize every opportunity during our communication and relationship with others to bring them to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. An invitation or text message about Christ can be shared through our SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms to bring the lost and dying to Jesus. One of the important New Year resolutions is winning souls for Christ through the sharing of the Gospel in our homes, workplaces and communities. Let us follow the example of Nathanael by starting from our immediate community of family and friends. Visit a friend or scroll through your phone contacts and begin to engage someone you believe has not yet had an encounter with the Messiah and invite him or her to “come and see!” Jesus. Let this be our calling as disciples of Jesus Christ from today forward.
In summary, we have reflected on the theme “Come and See!” We have learnt that it is our responsibility to invite others to Jesus, however, we cannot say to others, “come and see!” Jesus if we have not first experienced Him as the Messiah.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, strengthen us to overcome the challenges that hinder us from inviting others to Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. Grant us the boldness, confidence and will to preach the Gospel whenever we are given the opportunity so that many will come to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
